All's Not Equal In Realm Of Religion

Posted on Tuesday, August 02 at 09:49 by jensonj
Are Catholic and Orthodox Christians part of this mysterious "mainstream?" Apparently not, for they after all, deny women access to the priesthood. And what about Jews? I was at the bar mitzvah of a friend's youngster last month. In the synagogue, the central seats were occupied by men, women relegated to the seats on either side. So, plainly, Jews aren't part of this "mainstream" either. There is a fact of religious life -- be it Muslim, Jewish or Christian -- that columnist Turley-Ewart does not seem to grasp. To be part of any religion, except the most liberal ones, means separating yourself to some extent from the mainstream. If that mainstream is judged by its portrayal in sitcom television, for instance, then the separation will be wide indeed. Your sexual conduct will not be mainstream. Your vocabulary will not be mainstream. How you raise your children will not be mainstream. Neither will how you spend your money and a great deal of your time. It runs deeper than this. Churches constantly discriminate. While all people are equal in the sight of God, we are not all equal in the sight of the congregation. Certain privileges, distinctions and authority are conferred upon some, and denied to others. In the Catholic, Orthodox and Anglican churches, only a bishop -- or group of bishops -- can ordain people to the priesthood. Only a priest can pronounce the church's absolution for sin. There are times when the priest stands and the people kneel. http://www.canoe.ca/NewsStand/Columnists/Calgary/Ted_Byfield/2005/07/31/pf-1154118.html [Proofreader's note: this article was edited for spelling and typos on August 3, 2005]

As soon as religious employees sign a CAW union card (like the United Church clergy) there'll be big changes in the power brokering hate-mongering bigots that run religious organizations. The union movement is now the nation's biggest driver for social justice. Happy 20th anniversary CAW!

If any Canadian woman wishes to consider herself her husband's property, like cattle, that's her business. Baffling as some of these religions are, perhaps these women feel comforted that in Canadian law they are actually equal - they have an escape valve.

That is why Ontario should not be adopting Sharia law in any way shape or form. We have centuries of legal tradition that make Canada an attractive place to live - unlike any jurisdiction that has Sharia law. The fact that we have an ignorant Provincial Premier who is actually considering Sharia is astounding, it's like he was born yesterday. If the Liberals want to make such fundamental changes to Canadian society, the electorate should demand a referendum.

Sharia is just another way for McGuinty and his corporate fascist buddies to strip freedoms, whilst disguising it as 'tolerance.'

The assertion that a Muslim woman was barred from entering the front doors of Masjid Toronto is indeed strange. As a member of the Executive committee of Masjid Toornto I confirmed that none of our employees barred any women from entering the mosque. In fact, all TV and Radio reporters, women included, entered the front doors without being obstructed. It is possible that someone who is not from the mosque administration directed her to a door marked "sisters only", which is used on an everyday basis for women who want the privacy of praying in a private space provided for them on the upper floor. The door is side by side to the main doors and also leads directly to the main hall, which she entered.

Masjid Toronto is well known for accommodating people of all faiths in our main prayer area, a fact that can be substantiated by the Canadian Council of Jews and Christians which regularly takes grade 11 students on tours to the mosque.

What many in the non-Muslim community do not know is that there are a few in our community who would make a mountain out of a molehill in order to grab media attention. The National Post unfortunately did not attempt to clarify this story with Masjid Toronto.

You are all welcome to attend Masjid Toronto and share some spiritual moments with us.

No, it is not legal and not allowed. The custom is not Islamic religion but certain African cultures allow it and it has been blended in with the Islamic religion.

Another point, I am a male Muslim and I don't approve of Sharia being allowed in Ontario or anywhere in Canada. We should abide by the civil laws and that should be it. Can you the pandora's box that you are opening by allowing any one religion to practice their law parallel to Civil law.

Yes, the United Church wasn't enough of a politically correct left-wing institution already - the CAW had to get involved.

I have a simpler solution. From the recent British experience, we now KNOW that Muslims, even those born in their adoptive country, are not to be trusted. So, first, all Muslim immigration to Canada must be stopped immediately. Any Muslim present in Canada who is not already a citizen should be deported to his or her country of origin. As for the 650,000 Muslims already in Canada, they should be stripped of citizenship and given 24 months to leave the country on their own. During this waiting period they should report weekly to the police and show evidence they are preparing to leave. Anyone remaining in Canada after two years should be arrested and forcibly deported. Problem solved.
