Are Catholic and Orthodox Christians part of this mysterious "mainstream?"
Apparently not, for they after all, deny women access to the priesthood.
And what about Jews?
I was at the bar mitzvah of a friend's youngster last month.
In the synagogue, the central seats were occupied by men, women relegated to the seats on either side.
So, plainly, Jews aren't part of this "mainstream" either.
There is a fact of religious life -- be it Muslim, Jewish or Christian -- that columnist Turley-Ewart does not seem to grasp.
To be part of any religion, except the most liberal ones, means separating yourself to some extent from the mainstream.
If that mainstream is judged by its portrayal in sitcom television, for instance, then the separation will be wide indeed.
Your sexual conduct will not be mainstream. Your vocabulary will not be mainstream. How you raise your children will not be mainstream. Neither will how you spend your money and a great deal of your time.
It runs deeper than this.
Churches constantly discriminate. While all people are equal in the sight of God, we are not all equal in the sight of the congregation.
Certain privileges, distinctions and authority are conferred upon some, and denied to others.
In the Catholic, Orthodox and Anglican churches, only a bishop -- or group of bishops -- can ordain people to the priesthood. Only a priest can pronounce the church's absolution for sin. There are times when the priest stands and the people kneel.

That is why Ontario should not be adopting Sharia law in any way shape or form. We have centuries of legal tradition that make Canada an attractive place to live - unlike any jurisdiction that has Sharia law. The fact that we have an ignorant Provincial Premier who is actually considering Sharia is astounding, it's like he was born yesterday. If the Liberals want to make such fundamental changes to Canadian society, the electorate should demand a referendum.

Masjid Toronto is well known for accommodating people of all faiths in our main prayer area, a fact that can be substantiated by the Canadian Council of Jews and Christians which regularly takes grade 11 students on tours to the mosque.
What many in the non-Muslim community do not know is that there are a few in our community who would make a mountain out of a molehill in order to grab media attention. The National Post unfortunately did not attempt to clarify this story with Masjid Toronto.
You are all welcome to attend Masjid Toronto and share some spiritual moments with us.
Course there are the crusades which are still going on.
The National Post did not clarify a story with the Masjid.Hmm.Who owns/runs that pathetic rag?Coincidence?Nah!
Another point, I am a male Muslim and I don't approve of Sharia being allowed in Ontario or anywhere in Canada. We should abide by the civil laws and that should be it. Can you the pandora's box that you are opening by allowing any one religion to practice their law parallel to Civil law.
