I believe your article by Louisa Schaefer correctly described anti-American attitudes as a result of both current Bush administration actions and latent anti-American feelings which Bush and diminished need for American protection allow more Germans to freely express. To expect that America and Germany should march in step and agree on all issues is unreasonable. We do have legitimate different national interests and having a difference of opinion is not in itself unhealthy, but the ugly expression of anti-Americanism may not serve either of us very well. The average American is not particularly interested in what Germans think about America or otherwise. I believe it is important to have an understanding and respect of each other's opinion and I applaud the "rent an American" initiative, but relations may be better served by sending German students here. -- William Hayman, US

Back in the 1970s, Canadian songwriter Dan Hill wrote a song called "Growing Up in the Shadow of the USA." One of the lines in the chorus goes like this: "Oh America, it's a heavy kind of role you play, you're the hero, you're the villain, and your every move is on display." Do you really think that China, Russia or Iran would allow every move to be on display? -- Art Jamieson, Canada
