Is Online Free Speech In Danger?

Posted on Tuesday, August 08 at 10:06 by jensonj
On July 26, the House of Representatives passed the Deleting Online Predators Act (DOPA), which would ban social networking Web sites and instant messaging programs from schools and libraries. And a provision requiring Web sites with sexually related content to include warning labels is included in a wide-ranging broadband bill awaiting action in the Senate. Going Too Far? Both proposals go too far in their attempts to protect children from online pornography or sexual predators, the CDT said. The adult labeling provision, authored by Senators Conrad Burns (R-Montana) and John Kerry (D-Massachusetts), requires any Web site with sexually explicit "depictions" to be labeled. Such a broad definition could mean that sites would have to include labels if they have text descriptions of sexual acts, sex education content, or videos with no nudity, said John Morris, director of the CDT's Internet Standards, Technology and Policy Project. A site with PG-rated video including implied sex, with two people rolling around under blankets, may have to be labeled under the provision, Morris said. http://www.pcworld.com/article/126650-1/article.html?tk=nl_wbxnws

On line pornography has now to be labeled. I had thought it always was. I don't consider pornography as "free speach" nor a label making it restrictive.

I can accept that to a point.

It depends what one considers pornography or artistic form?

I have seen some Great Neo Classical art as well as modern art condemned by some groups as pornography?

From a legal perspective this has always been the underlying problem with Laws regarding pornography, the defining of pornography by society as a whole.

I agree but even WWE has warnings of coarse language and nudity. It's only a warning not a restriction. I couldn't care less if a museum has signs warning me of nudity but some mother may appreciate it. I can't imagine the "Naked Maja" as pornography, however some may think that way of the painting. Localy, some people were upset about a silhouette of a naked lady, indicated the local strip joint was restricted. It use to be a black cat and for some reason that was acceptable. In Vancouver a theater called itself the "Black Cat". No doubts to the type of films shown there. Even so, you'll find people still attending and complaining as to what they saw.
