NDP On Foreign Takeovers

Posted on Friday, June 01 at 17:11 by sthompson
Looking forward, whether it's on climate change, child care, prescription drugs, the high cost of gas and ATM fees, or the war in Afghanistan the federal NDP is working on the issues that everyday Canadians care about. You can find out more about our work at http://www.ndp.ca or by subscribing to our e-mail bulletin at subscribe@ndp.ca. Please be assured that the federal NDP will continue to stand up for everyday Canadians, their jobs and what's good for Canada. All the best. Sincerely, Jack Layton, MP (Toronto-Danforth) Leader, Canada's New Democrats Here are more good reasons why Jack Layton is calling for emergency hearings into rampant foreign takeovers of Canadians companies. 1. The rush is on: Since 1985, more than 12,100 Canadian firms have fallen to foreign interests, including 600 under the Harper government. 2. The rules are broken: Since 1985, not one foreign takeover application has been rejected by Ottawa—87% were approved without even being reviewed. 3. Harper isn’t acting: The Conservative government is doing nothing about the recent rash of takeovers, including US-based Alcoa’s hostile bid for Alcan. 4. Nobody’s safe: Foreign interests have already absorbed Canadian icons like Molson, Dofasco, Labatt, Inco, The Bay and even the Montreal Canadiens. 5. Jobs are at stake: When Canadian companies fall to foreign interests, the best-paying head-office jobs often leave the country too. 6. Canada’s slipping away: Foreign-based companies are gaining more control over our cultural industries, energy reserves and natural resources.

The U.S. Government doesn't allow foreign ownership to threaten and or control their culture, markets, natural and industrial resources.

This doesn't mean to say that they don't allow foreign ownership but they put checks and balances in place to prevent total control and limits how they use the resources of those companies while at the same time preventing valuable information, resources and technology from being removed from the U.S.

This is opposite to what they themselves strive for in their trade agreements with other countries. The U.S. will not agree to any trade agreement that would impose these barriers on them but at the same time would be crying foul that it was not a fair and level playing field.

    Example; NAFTA

The US has the right to "any good" which means energy resources or anything else water included - at the same price as Canadians get it. Which allows American Hydro, oil and gas companies the ability to limit Canadian company’s profits and their ability to compete and expand into the U.S. at the same time protecting their middle man position by giving them the right to control the selling price to the customer?

If Canada wishes to supply any form of energy to Canadian enterprise more cheaply or limit the amount that it sells to the US - in order to help develop Canadian industrial capacity or diminishing supply- it may not do so.

The US is given "national treatment" in a huge number of service industries. That means US enterprises must be treated as Canadian. Among them a very few are health and social services, management of hospitals, extended-care hospitals, psychiatric institutions, children's hospitals, public health clinics, medical laboratories, etc. In the list also are printing and publishing, postal and courier services, almost all building trades, drug industries, and education services.

What about most recently the lumber and cattle?

This is just a few items of a long list that give U.S. companies rights that they do not give Canadian companies in their country.

All I every here form the U.S. Senate, Congress and ruling Government is the call for a fair and level playing field but their trade agreements are far from level and fair.

Its about time Canadians started to look after our futures by putting an end to these regressive trade agreements and demand equal and fair treatment no more no less.

So rather than takeovers, why doesn't government invite foreign companies to set up competitive businesses, and run the so-called "inefficient" Canadian companies out of business? But then, I suspect that competition is not the real agenda here at all..........

Hope the Halifax Daily News gave credit to Mel Hurtig for that quote at the top of the article. It's almost word for word what we said three years ago.

There was a time when foreign companies had to PROVE they would be
beneficial to Canada and Canadians before they could do any business in
Canada, not just takeovers. That is what we need to go back to, but with NAFTA,
    lots of luck!

Maybe, if Canada stopped giving special treatment to foreign companies over Canadian Business and the U.S. gave the same treatment and opportunity to Canadian Business in the U.S. as American Businesses gets here then maybe Canadian Businesses would be more completive?

Amazing thought that Canada and the Canadian people should be considered before a takeover is allowed. Oh the humanity!

All forms of competition increase costs, as we can see in our daily lives.

The purpose of economic competition, war and crime is the forced acquisition of benefits and properties against the owners' will.

Or as Galbraith wrote many years ago: The purpose of competition is to eliminate competition.

Efficient economies are built on cooperation, not on competition.

Foreign investment is a fraud, as it brings nothing into the country. Its purpose is to take, therefore the expression "wealth creating foreign investment" should be an indictable offence.

Companies don't use their own monies for investment, but borrow, making the service charges tax deductible business expenses, transferring them on the public.

Today, when banks can "create" imaginary capital against a collateral owned by somebody else, this fraud has become an art and the biggest crime wave in human history.

Too bad no politician, or Party, would dare to speak up against it by telling the truth. The public has been so deeply brainwashed for generations with lies, that it would mean political suicide.

    Ed Deak.

Sorry Ed but there are some parties speaking out. And there are certainly some party members who are more vocal than others. I know the Greens gave me free reign to speak to what you have. It's not their central theme, but they recognize it, and embrace those of us among their ranks who do speak out.
