U.S. Envoy Says News More Good Than Bad

Wilkins told a group of GD workers the biggest myth he's encountered in his six weeks in Canada is that Americans and Canadians don't like or trust each other. "I've seen absolutely no evidence of that whatsoever," he said. "What I've found in visiting with folks like you is warmth and friendship and understanding and co-operation between friends and neighbours and business associates. "It's been a wonderful, wonderful experience." Wilkins said 96 per cent of Canada-U.S. trade is harmonious but the four per cent that isn't gets the headlines. The ambassador brushed off that negativity, saying: "I'm here to accentuate the positive. I'm here to talk about the wonderful co-operation we have between our two countries." On one of the major trade irritants, the long-standing softwood lumber dispute, Wilkins insisted during a question-and-answer session with reporters that Canada should negotiate a settlement. Asked why Canada should negotiate when trade tribunals have repeatedly upheld its position in the simmering dispute, Wilkins said both sides have a shared responsibility to seek a settlement. "That's the only way you are going to bring finality to this issue," he said. During his visit, Wilkins toured the GD plant and was given a ride in the Stryker on the plant's test track. He also delivered a pep talk to workers, telling them: "Your work here is not only impressive, but important. You are making a difference." He said the vehicles being built in London give U.S. forces the equipment they need "to stand in the gap between liberty and tyranny." http://www.canoe.ca/NewsStand/LondonFreePress/News/2005/08/20/1180704-sun.html

This guy is a fu.kn twit. He is saying who cares about the rule of law. It is only the U.S. rule of law that matters. Canada has to scrap NAFTA. Enough of those idiots down south. They can't be trusted, just a bunch of con-men, like this idiot.

    > the vehicles being built in London...

    (The unsaid message was)

...Could very easily be built in Detroit!

In other words: Shut up about lumber, or you'll wake up to find your auto job will be back on the other side of border, and you can go back on pogey.

As it is, lots of Americans refuse to buy any vehicle that has Canadian-made parts. The US Military *should* have all its vehicles made in the USA, not in Canada.

The U.S. envoy is correct, which is fortunate for Canada because there isn't anything too special that we manufacture that the U.S. couldn't get elsewhere.

Maybe they should go elsewhere for the resources to manufacture thise goods. Lord knows, it's not like they are our only market. We have put too many eggs in one basket. It's time we "smartened up" and expanded our markets for both resources and manufactured goods.

Sure! Suddenly stop trade with the one country that IMPORTS 80 PERCENT of canadian exports. By the way, that 80 percent of canadian export trade represents less than 20 percent of all American imports...

    Ooh, that'll teach 'em, eh?

"...it's not like they are our only market..."

Right. But they are the most lucrative market, willing to buy what you have for a reasonable price, eh? Sell your rocks and trees to someone else for a better price (sans shipping)! Look at everyone willing to pay more than those next-door neighbours (those bastards!).

Ever heard the phrase: "cutting off your nose to spite your face"?

Face it: canada is not a colony (Americans simply don't want it).

Canada is a poorly administered (soon to be failed) state whose economy is economically dependent upon America.

NAFTA is sucking us into running a store for one customer who is lawless in trade and prints as much 'money' as it needs to buy anything you are willing to sell. That's not lucrative, it's idiotic. Drop bilateral NAFTA and go with the multilateral WTO like we used to. One diplomatic letter and a six month wait and we'll be out of this lunacy. Canadians are not naturally xenophobic- get out of your sandbox.

Judith: [on Stan's desire to be a mother] Here! I've got an idea: Suppose you agree that he can't actually have babies, not having a womb - which is nobody's fault, not even the Romans' - but that he can have the *right* to have babies.<br />

Those are big boots to fill, Diogenes was the last great cynic.

Dio Chrysostom described Diogenes as terminating a discourse by squatting down and evacuating his bowels in the presence of his hearers. It is also said that he had no qualms about masturbating or performing other sexual acts in public.

    Not someone I admire.

    >>Canada is a poorly administered (soon to be failed) state whose economy is economically dependent upon America.<<

That's the sad part. You are about to drag us into your next depression. we have to try to extricate ourselves as much as possible from your failing economy, if only to ease the blow.
