Alberta Royalty Review Panel Releases Report

In the executive summary the panel figures Alberta could make an additional $2 BILLION per year by changing the royalty system! That's a bit better. What an outstanding legacy Ralph Klein has left for Alberta. The complete report is available Here

Hopefully no Ralph Klein lovers get in the way of any changes that could be coming. Here's what I think Ralph Klein's role was in creating the current system. Get the oil companies to make up the current system, then take their draft & get up in the legislature & say: "Alberta's gain is Canada's gain. What's good for Alberta is good for Canada. Don't mess with Alberta." LOL [Proofreader’s note: this article was edited for spelling and typos on September 20, 2007]

I was told by a former senior Alberta civil servant, now out of government, that the province is $100. billion in the hole with falling apart infrastructure and loss of services and that the claimed "great wealth" is by cooking the books.

Alberta is an ecological and health disaster waiting to happen, when the rest of the country and the world will have to pick up the real costs.

It's definitely a lot more than $100 million. The Mayor of the Wood Buffalo Municipality, in her presentation to the panel, said her own municipality (which contains Ft McMurray) needs $800 million to update their infrastructure. That's basic stuff like roads, water, sewers etc, not Bugatti dealerships. & that's just to support the people that are there right now, in one municipality. Some other people who made presentations to the panel also said the highway between Calgary & Edmonton is disintegrating. The government's Radke report (which everybody in Alberta should read thoroughly) also said there's an extremely severe need for planning from the government in order to deal with the growth that has taken place. The amount the province needs is probably a lot more than a billion, not $100 million. That's the mess that everyone's hero Ralph Klein has left. Apparently he thought it was more important to "use cowboy tactics" to keep easterners out of Alberta than to make sure people in his province could drive 2 miles in less than 30mins.
