Victoria SPP Protest Eyewitness Report

Posted on Tuesday, August 21 at 17:20 by sthompson
The protesters were completely silent letting their signs speak for them. The sign's messages included "When Bush Comes to Shove Resist", "Government by Stealth", "Arrest Warmongers", "Bush Go Home", "9/11 Truth Will Stop the SPP", "Security and Prosperity for Whom?" and many others. Two spokespersons entered the Times Colonist and attempted to speak to a reporter. They were told that no reporter was available and that they didn't know about the event. The Council's spokesperson stated that the Times Colonist had in fact been notified by them in advance. The protesters marched to all the other major media outlets in town - CH TV, CBC, A-Channel, and Monday Magazine. There were many honks of support the people driving by during the march and a very high percentage of people on the street were interested in taking the flyers that were being handed out. The protest was silent at each location and the response of each media outlet varied widely. A-Channel and Monday Magazine were the most receptive. A-Channel filmed at the Times Colonist and in front of their own building conducting interviews at both locations. Monday Magazine sent out a couple of photographers and spoke at length with the spokesperson. At CH TV, a cameraman came out and interviewed the spokesperson. Not surprisingly, the poorest response came from the biggest media outlets the Times Colonist, and CBC. In fact, the police appeared at the CBC. I suspect they aren't used to having a crowd descend upon their office and overreacted. So far the local media coverge has consisted of inclusion of small segment of an interview with the group spokesperson on CH TV and similar coverage by A-Channel. If you haven't seen it yet, be sure to checkout the Youtube video showing a union organizer foiling an attempt by rock wielding, masked agent provocateurs to start a riot and bring on an attack by the riot cops waiting nearby. More than likely these guys were undercover cops as near the end of the clip you can see them running eagerly into the arms of the waiting riot cops instead of running in the opposite direction as you might expect a real, rock throwing anarchist to do.

The union guy states in the video that he challenged one of them during the confrontation and accused him of being a cop and from the reaction he got, he was sure he was right.
This incident with the agent provocateurs happened in Quebec. It wasn't related to the Victoria protest. Sorry, I didn't make that clear in the original post.

OK--I'm going to post a little stand-alone article directing people there, spanky, so more people see it.
