Since he was appointed a year ago, Wilkins has logged more than 100,000 kilometres in travels across Canada. "I have pet polar bears and skated the Rideau Canal. . . . I have met as many Canadians as I possibly could, so I could listen and learn," he said. Wilkins said the election of the Harper government in Ottawa was "a new beginning" for Canada-U.S. relations. "There's a real feeling of optimism and a sense of working closer together . . . it's evident not only in Ottawa, it's evident in Washington," said Wilkins, noting a long list of senior U.S. officials have recently visited Canada. http://lfpress.ca/newsstand/CityandRegion/2006/04/26/1550904-sun.html
