Since he was appointed a year ago, Wilkins has logged more than 100,000 kilometres in travels across Canada.
"I have pet polar bears and skated the Rideau Canal. . . . I have met as many Canadians as I possibly could, so I could listen and learn," he said.
Wilkins said the election of the Harper government in Ottawa was "a new beginning" for Canada-U.S. relations.
"There's a real feeling of optimism and a sense of working closer together . . . it's evident not only in Ottawa, it's evident in Washington," said Wilkins, noting a long list of senior U.S. officials have recently visited Canada.
