The Constitution Act, 2007 (Democratic Representation) changes the formula for allocating seats in the House of Commons. Under the new Bill, after the next census, Ontario will receive an additional 10 seats in the House of Commons (instead of 4), British Columbia will receive an additional 7 seats (instead of 2) and Alberta will receive an additional 5 seats (instead of 1). These figures are based on current population projections.
“Canadians across the country deserve to have fairness in representation,” continued Minister Van Loan. “Our legislation will go a long way toward ensuring that each province is represented fairly in the House of Commons.”
