Confidential task force document reveals true business agenda for Canada

OTTAWA - A confidential document from the Task Force on the Future of North America confirms the Council of Canadians’ worst fears: Canada’s business elite are planning to push the country toward deeper integration with the United States, including abandoning protections for culture and fresh water.

The task force talks of a North American Common Market. But this ought not to fool us. There is no way this would look like the EU. This would be the US dominating Canada and Mexico even more than it does already. We will only be the poorer for joining such a thing. Canada ought to look to the EU and Mexico to an alliance of Hispanic states rather than touch this one. It also goes to show how the business class of Mexico and Canada are nothing more than compradors.

I wouldn't make any binding agreements with anyone, only confidence based agreements, but yeah, our business class is a pusover class. If I were them, I'd be very embarrassed.

I don't want to appear anti-american, but I do oppose some of their policies. They have proven that they answer to no-one. If this happens, does our government really believe they would retain any power at all? Please tell me they are smarter than that....

That's assuming they care about long term...

The document did have some interesting "feelers", like the potential for unrestricted continental labour mobility which appears to be (of course) relegated to "long term goals" (read: dream on). One wonders who was responsible for suggesting that, and whether they all had a good laugh right before lunch.

I can't see ordinary Canadian's standing for this, more like outrage, a minority cannot tell the majority what is good for it. Majority of Canadians will not accept this, there will be a bloody civil war. I am not a violent person, but if this happens then we will see in Canada the same thing that happens in Northern Island, but it will be the business elite that will be targeted. If there is a minority that is trying to destroy everything that Canada stands for so they can join a foreign country then these people are traitors and should be dealt with accordingly. The time will come when the army will have to be called upon by ordinary citizens to seize these people. Call me crazy but the alternative is no country called canada. So are people going to fight to save their country or let it die! you want Canada or you don't, there is no and/or/ buts. I think a copy of the report of the council of canadians should be given to the army as they are the ones that are supposed to protect our sovereignty. Could also include the Canadian Security Intellingence Service in that Category as well. I hope that CSIS has there eye on these people whether they are members of any political party, business or ordinary citizens. I for one will fight for my country if I have to.

All the recommendations make my blood boil, but one in particular irks me the most: a North American passport. A passport is the ultimate expression of a state's sovereignty, and a citizen's link to that sovereign state. I echo the above poster's premonition that these recommendations are serious enough to incite a violent backlash. There's no way a majority of canadians will buy into this crap. Honesty, what drugs are these people on? Are they really that out of touch with Canadian public opinion. apparently so. Argh!!!!!!! I just want to scream.

Please don't apologize when you have done nothing wrong. To find fault with the American government's policies is no more anti-American than finding fault with our own is anti-Canadian.

Re "Another subject touched upon in Toronto was the developement of a shared North American identity. Participants agreed that progress on this front will require effort within the educational system and the mass media."... "(Task Force participants Robert Pastor and Thomas Axworthy offered to develop this proposal further)"

...Does anyone know who Thomas Axworthy is? It sounds like an ambitious project to erase Canadian identity. This fellow must be pretty special.

Yep screaming over here too! I agree with most of the posters above, except the one that says Canadians will rise up....we won't, because most of us won't know what is happening till it's over. This is the problem, imo, these guys making decisions are not elected to do so, JOhn Manley is the ex-deputy prime minister, he is no longer an elected official and Tom D'Aquino is head of the CCCE, which doesn't work for us. The people of Canada have a right to know what is on the horizon and the impact of that decision or even the plans!

The comments about changing NAFTA, a trade decision already unfair to Canadian people, rather than scrap it, they want to make it less protectionist. Our water, natural resources, the grid all are going to fall under the North American governance!!!!!! Sheeesh this is so not good! I have been stewing over this for two days now, what are we going to do?? Write letters is all I can think of right now, but even that I caution myself because I may write something I'll regret. Our sovereignty is definitely in jeopardy today, only faster than expected.

Catherine, don't you think that the Council of Canadians could get people talking? I mean, 100,000 members+ Hurtig, Orchard supporters and many NDPers, Liberals would mean that if everyone in that group told ten people, it would be a million, and it could snowball from there. Community meetings, etcettera.

Think about this as well: aren't a common dollar, passport and curriculum visible things even the average lont-time resident would question? What would be to stop us from buring our passports, taking our money out of the banks and buring the new textbooks of propaganda at schools. Nothing.

I have been very critical of Maude Barlow but I really have to give her credit for getting back on the popular nationalist bandwagon in a hurry.

I'm screaming too! I'm so ashamed that once respected people have given up on what Canada stands for. It's sickening. A Deputy Prime Minister for God sakes!
