Alta Driver Licences Raise Privacy Concerns

The licence features a laser-engraved digital photo of the user that will be stored in a data bank to which government and police will have access.

Once the information is engraved into the card, it cannot be mechanically or chemically removed without leaving obvious signs of tampering.

Mel Fruitman of the Consumers' Association of Canada questions the need for the new card.

"Why should law-abiding citizens be on a file somewhere, where someone could access that for whatever nefarious reason?" he asked. "No computer system is absolutely secure," he said.

    So some Albertan\'s are worried about privacy, guess they haven\'t heard about the census yet! The Canadian government will be prosecuting those of us who don\'t fill out the census, which is tantamount to forcing us to divulge national secrets to a foreign power! I can see the headlines now,\' Canadian government prosecutes individuals for not being traitors\'! But of course the Alberta government doesn\'t think it\'s part of Canada anyway...

    Have had photos that were always stored and available to law enforcement... Want proof? Go get a replacement license from a different registry location. Miracle!
