The former prime minister spoke to reporters at the Salon du Livre in Montreal where he spent an hour autographing copies of his new book of political memoirs.
Mulroney was also scheduled for a signing of his own memoirs at the same time, but cancelled at the last minute.
It was Chretien's first public event since he underwent heart surgery last month.
"The minister of justice called me and he said that in the trial (lawsuit) here in Montreal the former prime minister swore that he never had any business with Mr. Schreiber and we could not prove the contrary. So the RCMP looked like it made a mistake and we settled out of court.
"After that we learned that he did do business with him," Chretien
