Caption Contest

Posted on Saturday, December 18 at 17:49 by Crankster
With all the sad things happening in the world,we have a contest by,what I thought was a thoughtful and insightful site for people to have a voice to speak out with. I thought the people behind the scenes were more intellectual than pose a contest that involves the mockery of a country under seige by a bully and a war-monger. My voice shall no longer be apart of this forum.I will try and disuade others from venturing to this site as well. Too bad, this site has such promise.

I'm sorry you feel that way Crankster. The caption contest and photo were both suggested by Mel Hurtig and are being run on vive at his request. If you feel strongly about it, please let Mr. Hurtig know how you feel.
And of course, if we receive enough negative feedback about it, we will definitely reconsider running such contests in future.

---
Canadians are asking, why do americans hate us? They hate our freedoms: our freedom of religion, our freedom of speech, our freedom to disagree with each other.

The contest is a 'low-brow' sort of endeavour, it is only likely to recieve pithy remarks that don't do justice to the seriousness of the situation regardless of how one feels about the war.

Seems a paltry way to get a book out into the public. The plight of kids in Iraq is something i feel should not be taken so lightly.
To use it as a contest, while we sit in the safety of our homes and experience all the freedoms we have, seems to smack of the same propaganistic nature found in "our neighbors" down south.
Upon seeing this picture, the only "caption" that came to mind was "If you want to live, little guy,use one of these." Not the type of message that would help that little guy.

Another way to look at it is that it takes time looking at the photo to get a caption to come to mind. That in itself provokes thoughtfullness on the issue.

I'm not a real citizen or landed emigrant, but if were my caption would be: "My hero."

In my opinion writing a caption for this photo is no different then debating the Iraq war with others, while we sit in the comfort of our homes. I don't see much difference if one is making comments on the Iraq war, or writing a caption of a photo showing a clip of what is going on there.

And when that gun goes off, the sound will echo through that kids mind along with the scene of someone dying, (possibly his father) for the rest of his life. I doubt that he will understand that he is being "liberated" jj. More likely he will remember the trauma and associate it with the image of an American invader. A born again "terrorist", right jj?

I had forgotten Iraq was a paradise under Saddam.

As Canadians participate in the world as it is -- which is to say sleeping through history -- sitting in the comfort of the living room is the only option there is.

Crankster I am sorry you feel this way about the contest. I think that picture says a great deal about war, many of us sitting at home can't imagine how close death and destruction is to the innocents. This picture captures the real essence of war. It isn't to promote anything, but rather to cause thought, deep thought and I think it is a great way to do it. A picture is worth a thousand words and this one is worth even more in my mind.

I had forgotten Iraq was a paradise under Saddam?
Then it is also safe to assume you have forgotten Iraq was under a puppet installed by the US.
This either or thinking displayed by your self and some others here only goes to show the degree of brain-dirtying you have received an your willingness to accept it.

I would have to agree with Crankster. This photo has nothing to do with Canadian sovereignty. The photo is a poignant view of the War in Iraq that requires no caption.

I do not care if it was Mel Hurtig, or Mother Theresa who suggested this contest. This contest is sick. Shame on the editors for allowing this to go ahead. If indeed it was Mr. Hurtig that suggested the “caption-for-an-autographed-copy-of-my-book” contest then it is probably the worst attempt at self-promotion I have seen in my life.
