This had me scratching my head. Over the last few months I’ve written a lot about Iraq, terrorism and guerilla warfare; and if there’s one thing I’m sure of it’s that if the Canadian population decided to resist a US occupation the US would never be able to hold Canada without committing massive atrocities. As I said before the Iraq invasion, “it’s not winning the war, it’s winning the 'peace.'” Canada is the largest country in the world. Not only would it be nearly impossible to root out rural guerillas but it would be impossible to stop Canadian guerillas from striking into the US. You think 9/11 was bad? Every atrocity in Canada would be mirrored by attacks in the US. We’re so close culturally that once across the border Canadians would have no trouble blending into and operating in US society.
There are two likely responses to this. The first is that it has little to do with the military. In a sense that’s true, in another sense it isn’t. Just as in Iraq, ex-military would operate as cadre forces for the opposition. The second argument is that the US would never invade Canada. I’ve never believed that and after George Bush Jr., I hope that fewer Canadians are naïve enough to believe it. We’ve got a lot of water the US may want one day and if the oil sands become viable, we’ve got a lot of oil. I’m not saying it’s likely, but it’s not impossible and the military is a form of insurance against this sort of action.
The best form of insurance would be nuclear weapons. In a world where North Korea, Pakistan and Israel have nukes I don’t see why Canada shouldn’t have them. To heck with guerilla warfare – 20 mobile nuclear missiles roaming randomly across the countryside, or a hundred suitcase bombs which would be handed out to operatives in the case of any American invasion – and, well, there would be no invasion. Iraq wasn’t invaded because it had WMDs. It was invaded because it didn’t. We could have nukes in 6 months. And we should. Not doing so is irresponsible in the post-George W. Bush world.
But, in a sense, I’ve run ahead of myself. Kevin asked “why?” and that was the right question. So here’s my answer: we should have an army to defend ourselves from the invasion (the US), to defend our territorial waters, and to allow ourselves to intervene as part of NATO or UN forces when we need to, in order that we have some influence on foreign affairs (no credible army, no one pays attention to you.)

History bears this out and it will be interesting to see how cultural tensions unfold as the bicentennial anniversary of the War of 1812 approaches. The American's won't want to talk about it and be offended by any Canadian marking of the event.
Kaplan wrote in "The Coming Anarchy" something along the lines of "picture a stretch limosine cruising through a war-torn urban ghetto, in the 21st century, North America will be that limo and the rest of the world will be that war-torn ghetto."
I think it would be more accurate to say, Canada will be that limo, the US will be part of the rest of the world.
We're in a unique position, we've got far more natural resources than any other country in the world and the least number of people to consume it.
If we think the rest of the world is just going to quietly die of hunger, thirst, or watch their standard of living plummet and basic commodity prices skyrocket and leave us to lounge in our water, oil, land and everything else undisturbed, we're crazy. They're going to come and get it and the Americans are going to be at the front of the line.
In 20 years an American invasion will be entirely thinkable on the basis of "keeping our resources away from China and India" alone.
I also think we should be weaponizing our nuclear program. The Americans have proven they are not morally above anybody, so unless everybody else in the world disarms, I don't see why we shouldn't. We have the most to lose of any other country on earth.
The WORLD loves Canada! Nobody will ever dream of committing a dastardly deed towards Canadians. Canadians are the most morally superior people in the world, and therefor, they need no military.
Save the money you would otherwise waste on a death-oriented military. Instead, spend it on the greatest systems, that make Canada the best country in the world - like Free Health Care!
Meanwhile, if those bastardly Americans do invade, well, the rest of the world, as embodied by the UN, will send its military forces to boot them out.
However, I do think that a Canadian national force (home guard)should be established, perhaps something similar to that of the Swiss, whereas everyone does 2 years millitary training and is also responsible for securing a rifle, and medical supplies. Therefore in the event of a crisis at home, nearly all the population can and will react sufficiently. Who in their right mind would want to occupy an entire population trained in guerilla warfare? I'm not too worried myself, Its no secret what a trained Canadian can do in battle, the nice-guy canuck thing wears off real quick when he/she is threatened. I think that perhaps all of this can be avoided. If we managed our resources better and took them out of the hands of un-accountable big-business, there are enough resources to go around. I think we should better our image as a provider for the worlds needs, however a hand you would never dare bite. We should dig in like an Alabama tick and regain our strength from within. The battle for Canada is not with a foreign army, the battle for Canada is with foreign ownership of Canadian resources/jobs/companies.
The answer to that is easy. Get rid of Canadians.
The detonation of a neutron bomb produces an explosion, but one much smaller than a standard nuclear weapon's. The main effect of a neutron bomb is the release of high-energy neutrons that would take lives far beyond the blast area.
The result: fewer buildings, cars, tanks, roads, highways and other structures destroyed.
Unlike standard nuclear bombs that leave long-term contamination of the soil and infrastructure, the neutron radiation quickly dissipates after the explosion.
The neutron bomb is the ultimate sane weapon. It kills humans, or "the bad guys," but doesn't produce tremendous collateral damage on civilian populations and the infrastructure a civilian population needs to survive.
Keep this in mind, Canadians.
Guess what country you hate has these?
Good luck trying to get rid of Canadians, never in a thousand years would you suceed. How can I expect you to have working knowledge of this argument, many of your people couldn't point to Canada on a map. Don't bite the hand that feeds you.
I will say this once and say it again: UNTIL CANADA and other western countries get out of this debt slavery (see www.comer.com) we will NOT be able to afford a big military that we will eventually need.

The United States is completley in the hands of the bankers, both the Jewish and gentile Federal Reserve bankers and other commercial banks. The reason they are so screwed is not just globalism, it is their 12 trillion dollar debt which is compunding thanks to USURY.

I have my doubts that China and India will be insurmountable militarily, but they will be around and the U.S. in their debt and accounts deficit will NOT be able to defend us as they do now. They do it on their own terms, but they still do defend the region.

Militarily, we are a joke even compared to the pathetic standards of European defence these days, which are national police forces.

Despite good training, we spend too little on training, domestic R & D, equipment replacement, and have so much bureaucracy it is insane and slows us down big time. The Quebec bullshit just adds to that.
---
The midget, Bush, and that Rumsfield deserve only to be beaten with shoes by freedom loving people everywhere.
Canada has so much to be proud of.
Or not.
Canada is truely a contemptible country, filled with small-minded people.
Canada.
Least of nations.
Don't bite the hand that feeds you.
Saddam is bad, but I don't Iraqis.
The Taliban and OBL are bad, but I don't hate the afgans or any of the many minorities that live in the region called Afganistan.
Nor do I hate America, or Americans. George W Bush though, the grandson of a known Nazi collaborator Prescott Bush, is a war criminal, decesended from Hilters American banking intrest handler.
Ouch, feel the truth burn...
ON THEIR OWN TERMS! Absolutely.
> Militarily, we are a joke
I agree completely.
Most Canadian's assumption that they have a god-given right to criticize, and yet count upon defense by those Americans that they criticize, is the absolute height of hypocricy.
Do any of you wonder why there is a growning disgust with Canada on the Ameican side of the border?
It had something to do with the British. Nothing to do with Canada, which simply didn't exist at that time. Canada actually was weaned off the British tit in 1962 or so, and has damn little to be proud of as its own country since then.
What's your point? Canada wants to be a nuclear power, simply to be able to pre-emptively destroy America?
Canada, the equivalent of North Korea!
But, you probably see nothing wrong with that.
Such a high moral ground you claim. Such a joke.
