What nonsense, we should a build a tall, solid wall across the border to keep them away from our country. Our loggers, cattlemen, and all the other people who have lost their jobs because of them should build it.

I'm all for friendship and unity, but this is a very naive kind of view of things. Closer ties and a better relationship between our countries are undeniably positive things--but if those good ideas are used to actually mean the further expansion of a specific economic framework that hurts the majority of people (eg by increasing poverty and the gap between the rich and the poor, and by limiting democracy) then it is not really expressing the compassion and concern for each other that characterize spirituality. The article essentially ignores or glosses over legitimate reasons for differences in policies on trade, foreign relations etc and offers only a wishy-washy plea for us to all get along instead.

I don't believe we should build a wall between us. But I don't believe we should ERASE the border between us either, especially if doing so actually hurts citizens in both countries (ie NAFTA plus). And by asking us to set aside all national differences, this article could imply that we should pursue that course of action.

Now call it extreme if you like, but I propose we hit it hard, and we hit it fast, with a major, and I mean major...leaflet campaign.--Rimmer, Red Dwarf

Why can't we just both mind each other's own business? Why all this best
friends crap? Best friends don't abuse their power to get what they want out
of you whilst ignoring your own needs. Best friends don't think its ok to
shoot down missiles over your head. Canada needs the US just as much as I
need a hole in the head. We have more than enough resources to take care of
ourselves, and we need to diversify our trade so that when the US falls, we
don't fall with them. The US is just one country in the world, and we need to
    treat them that way.

On a sidenote, doesn't anyone else think its f****d-up that 40% of the world's
oil goes to the US, a country with 4% of the world's population?

Do that and pretty soon that wall will serve the same function as the one in Berlin did - to keep the ambitious and enterprising from leaving socialist Canada for the free world.

In MHO this friendship stuff is bunk. It's all political rhetoric. We do business between our two countries and nobody is going to join your war, stop you from going to war, let your beef in, or share energy resources because you're friends. If I do business with you it doesn't mean I have to like you or the way you treat your kids. People will do business deals with Hitler, the Pope, or the latest coup d'etat leader, and have done so, until somebody more powerful, the laws, or an electorate, say they can't or the consequences cost more than the profit. Even 'friendly' Tourism is a business deal. So is debt relief to Africa and invading another country to 'free' their people(so sorry Total and Luk oil... nya, nya, nya). All the rhetoric you hear about "Keeping America Safe" and "A Secure Border" is all about business. Perhaps it shouldn't be so, but it is.
People are able to love, hate, criticize, or praise (you should be specific for clarity) in private and sometimes in public and should exercise that freedom. But, as it's been said before, speaking for all Canadians, speaking about all Americans, and vice versa is useless. So, if one thinks building a wall on the border would be useful for some reason then that may be valid, I'm sure Israel might agree, but one should leave the friendship rhetoric to the three amigos.
Further, trolls looking for the idea that all Canadians are anti-American(whatever that means) might as well be looking for a consensus that we are all anti-brocoli, so I think they have other more personal issues to be worried about than spending time here seeking what cannot exist.

To all our friends north of the border, enjoy Canada Day. I'm flying the Maple Leaf flag all day here in Pennsylvania, like I do every year, until the 4th of July. Honestly.
