Canada Joins Cyber-Hate Crackdown

Posted on Friday, July 08 at 18:01 by jensonj
Cotler was in England a day earlier at Cambridge University when four bombs ripped through London, killing more than 50 people and injuring 700 others. Officials are investigating an Internet claim by a little-known group calling itself "The Secret Organization of al-Qaida in Europe" that it staged the attacks. Cotler says the new protocol means law enforcers can pool efforts internationally to prosecute Internet racists and shut down their sites. He cites a connection between terrorist attacks and an explosion in the last decade of sites used to swap tips on everything from exterminating whole ethnic groups to building bombs. "Incitement to hatred can itself be a connecting link to terrorism," Cotler said. "And in some instances, it's the most proximate cause of terrorism itself." Canada, which signed the Convention on Cybercrime in November 2001, joins 28 other countries in supporting its first additional protocol to fight Internet racism. The number of websites promoting violence against specific groups has rocketed in the last decade to 5,000 from a single Neo-Nazi site in 1995, says Leo Adler, a spokesman for the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Centre For Holocaust Studies in Toronto. Holocaust denier Ernst Zundel is the best example of why international action is needed, he said. Zundel, prohibited from spreading his Internet message from Canadian-based sites, simply switched to a server in Tennessee, Adler said. Zundel was deported to Germany in March after losing a marathon legal fight to stay in Canada. Anyone convicted under the Criminal Code of promoting hatred against a specific group faces up to two years in jail. http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Canada/2005/07/08/pf-1123225.html [Proofreader's note: this article was edited for spelling and typos on July 10, 2005]

As far as I can see, the Canadian government has given every opportunity to the First Nations people. There is only so much you can do to help people and after that the onus is on them to take advantage. The fact of the matter is these people get free healthcare, free education including university, and have many other social service programs provided to them. With this support their it seems that an inordinate number of First Nations choose to sit back on their asses on their reserves collecting welfare. Maybe they should start becoming a little bit smarter with what is offered to them and quit being such a drain on society. Is it society's fault when they refuse to join it but want to live on its edge and sponge of it?

thats right. Death to Free Speech!!!

If i say (pick a race) is bad, someone might read that and they hate that group (after all people are stupid sheep who believe whatever they read) So i must be put in jail. Hate Crime Laws are a "Savage Hipocrasy", to quote South Park. ESPECIALLY in Canada, with regards to first nations.

I wonder how long until critisism of the government, and globalization becomes "Hate Speech".

    re the comment by hoopoe:

Ah yes, the inevitable stereotype that all Natives are "lazy welfare bums". How about some evidence, rather than resorting to false generalizations?

In actual fact many Native People do not have a choice between the reserve and employment. Also, all the actual evidence says that rather than being cushy government-supported holiday resorts, reserves tend to have much higher rates of poverty, unemployment, and disease than the rest of Canada. Aboriginal women are particularly vulnerable and violence against aboriginal women is a serious problem.

The comment about "joining society" also suggests that assimilation is supposedly the better choice for First Nations peoples. What about actually giving our First Nations more control over their own desitinies and actually settling the many outstanding land claims based on treaties the federal government has thus far refused to honour? First Nations aren't looking for special priviledges, just a means of survival and an end to racism. And let's nto forget they contributed greatly to the development of Canada.

Re the first comment: you're right, the federal government has a long way to go to actually start treating First Nations fairly and recognizing rights. But isn't this a step in a good direction? Neo-Nazi sites for example could easily also target First Nations and the legislation provides a way to prosecute if they do.

Re the idea that cyberhate legislation could be applied to dissidents or critics of globalization--that's a slippery slope argument, and there's really no evidence to suggest it would happen (unlike say, anti-terrorism legislation, which evidence shows HAS in many cases been applied to plain-old immigrants and dissenters).

If you think this is a stereotype, then tell me how they are supporting themselves while living on the reserve? If not actual welfare, then it is by some other government social program that hands them money without working. Your use of the word stereotype is simply a means of trying to guilt somebody into not stating the truth of a given situation. This whole article was about Natives not getting enough in handouts from the Canadian government so I don't see where your argument of my statements being a stereotype even begins to have merit (I am presuming by the vitriolic tone of the article that this was written by a Native).

I am fully aware that many Natives live in poverty. "Cushy government-supported holiday resort" are your words not mine and my comment did not imply that I thought that at all; I simply said they are getting money without working (maybe you should learn how to read an article and think about what it says before making comments). Your comment about high poverty rates, unemployment, etc. support my position that they come out and join the rest of society.

As far as assimilation goes, I have no problem with them living on their reserves. My complaint is that they want to have all the benefits of modern society without actively participating in it. A lot of their land claims are ridiculous, one claim is for almost all of BC and another for huge parts of Alberta. For other realistic land claims fine but that still doesn't answer my question as to what are they doing to make a living on that land.

If simply handing out money to them worked this problem would have been solved by now.

You mean like the Anti-Canadian hate crime site, northamericans4peace? You know the one that bases it's hatred of Canada on basically the same isolated story, and compounds it with the most stunning leaps of illogic I've ever seen?
