Cellucci Pushes For Open Skies

Posted on Friday, January 30 at 18:06 by Perturbed
Personally I think the big mistake was allowing Air Canada to privatize in the first place. This hurt smaller towns, and will restrict access to various parts of such a large country. I dislike paying a private company's debts, and think we should go the train route, and not re-claim Air Canada. This being said, we should set our own policy.

Are we seeing the true colours of supposed "Nationalists" like David Collenette, now that they have no job to lose? Or is this just phony-baloney from former Liberals ministers? hmmm......here's the comment:

The Globe and Mail
Let the airlines fly in truly open skies
Friday, January 30, 2004 - Page A16

U.S. ambassador Paul Cellucci said recently that his government wants to talk about opening up the North American airline market to true cross-border traffic with Canada, a concept known as cabotage. Prime Minister Paul Martin and his Transport Minister, Tony Valeri, should take Washington up on its offer as soon as possible.......and the link:

Why is it that if Cellucci wants something I know it\'s not going to be good for Canada? I can\'t get past thinking that the only reason the U.S. government wants access to open skies over Canada is that is would make it impossible for us to have Canadian made security measures. I\'d have no probelem if it was the European countries asking for the same thing. We\'ve been crushed too many times by \"thumb-of-Sam\" for me to feel good about this move. If Bush wants to be unilateral - go be unilateral. You\'ve said you don\'t need Canada so act like you mean it. This is the last country that I want Canada assimilated into. Do we really want to be suckered into living in fear of colours? Red is not what scares the bejeezes out of me. Policed state scares the bejeezes out of me!!!! Keep me as far away from this kind of insanity as possible. My only hope is that Bush will not get reelected and the new president will have the integrity and morals we need from a super power.

    4Canada,

    I agree with you.

I also don\'t get how Canadian politicians would ever allow this when it is so obvious that Canadian airlines will be taken over by American airlines.

Also the concerns of personal data when traveling is another issue. With American airlines owning the skies, I guess that would mean they can make countries they fly to and from, will have to present the personal data of their passengers.

I\'m getting so frustrated at the time in history I have to live in, with the Americanization of Canada. Doesn\'t seem like anyone\'s around to save Canada.

For US carriers to fly domestic routes in Canada, they would have to bilingulaise their planes and their staff. Could you just imagine American Airlines or USAir outfitting their planes with \'sortie\' beside the exit signs? Hire bilingual staff? (I suppose they could work out some sort of exchange programme with Canadian stewards, but still, a pain in the ass for them). Ha! That\'ll be the day. Americans spending money for French people. Once again in our history the French-Canadians will help thrawt off a US invasion.

So when will we be sending Cellucci home? The man isn\'t a diplomat, he\'s a corporate spokesperson. As the US\'s biggest trading partner, closest neighbour and reasonably good ally, I think we deserve better.

I can help you: you got ripped off. Someone stole part of your paper, or lost it. (If it was delivered.)
