The Budget

Quebec will see the greatest benefit under the plan, which sets out about $3.2 billion in new money for the provinces. Based on its population, Quebec will get $919 million of that amount, just shy of one-third of the transfers allocated to the provinces in Finance Minister Jim Flaherty's Budget 2007. http://tinyurl.com/2wxsrb

BC, apparently, gets nothing, with the donations ending at the Rockies.

The pine beetle disaster is potentially wiping out whole sectors and sections of the interior within a few years, with nothing to replace the forest works, huge homelessness numbers, etc.

Of course, the phoney GDP is still going up, against all this, so everything is OK, according to economists and politicians.

Harper is courting electors in Quebec, knowing that the West will vote Reform, or if things go bad, break off and joins the USA, which is his plan anyway.

If this guy ever gets majority, we can kiss Canada goodbye.

Nova Scotia gets less unless it agrees to let PM Bully tear up the off-shore Accord. I think the same applies to NF. Saskatchewan has been shafted, and NB and BC are not happy. The individuals in those provinces will likely see the benefits they receive in the budget negated by reduced services or higher taxes from the provinces.

Most of the money goes to Quebec with other large pots for Ontario and Alberta. This is the kind of "he who has, gets" budget that you would expect from the neo-cons.

Can the neo-cons so easily buy votes?

It's a ridiculous budget, which nobody is happy about except Quebec. It proves once again that this government thinks supporting childcare means springing for some trailer park mom's pack of smokes, tax breaks should always benefit the rich the most, and protecting the environment means throwing out some token lip service that will hopefully make the treehuggers go away and leave them alone.

Vote for the environment in our next election, people. Time has now run out. That means vote ANYBODY except the Liberals or Conservatives.

I read a comment by the Finance minister that the provincial transfer payment re-alignment will now mean provinces should spend within their own means. Seemed like a shot across the bow of Quebec.

As an Albertan who underwent a major shift in provincial spending to get rid of the deficit and debt, that's always been my problem with Quebec. Spending like a drunken sailor.

I suppose we haven't heard from our Quebec bretheren because they are happy with the budget. The 'fiscal imbalance' is hereby eliminated.

First, Harper desperately wants a majority, so he can get down to serious social-re-engineering, and he will do anything to get it. Second, the only way he can win a majority is to do everything he is viscerally opposed to. Harper does polls and focus groups by the truckload. He knows the Strategic Counsel poll that came out budget day was an accurate reflection of the Canadian reality: 50 per cent of Canadians wanted the surplus spent on social programs, only 19 per cent wanted tax cuts. Actually, the poll was even worse news for neo-cons -- another 15 per cent wanted more money transferred to the provinces, most of which actually goes to social programs.<br />

The Cretien Liberals proved that no party should ever again enjoy a majority in Parlament. The current CPC government proves that minority governments can work, and compromise is the key.

I will take this as one of those statement you make to whip up interest.

With all due respect, ALL governments work! For someone or the other or some agenda or another.

Your statement is so worded as to be taken in several ways, one of which sounds like an endorsment for the current gov.

Well, for the record, I'm from Quebec City.

Most people I know here don't give a damn about politics. People around here are disgustingly full of apathy and ignorance. Why do you think so many voted Conservatives, last election? Most were applying what I call "negative voting". It goes somewhat like this:

    The Liberals? Corrupt.
The Bloc? We're sick of this independance stuff and all they do is oppose.
The NDP? The media make them look like weak-kneed opportunists.
The Greens? Like my vote will matter, then!
    Independants? Huh? Who's that?

So, who's left? Conservatives. People don't even bother learning what's their platform.

Sure, there is a very vocal and active minority, but most of them play partisan politics. I used to be a separatist, until I saw that separatist leaders weren't really concerned with the well-being of the people. All they want is their turn to have their petty power trip. They just want to be powerful, to be elected, not to do what's right and helpful.

The few people I know who do care and who would like to truly help others usually say to me things like: "I wish it was otherwise, but I don't see how I can make a difference in the end."

Of course, I can't speak for the whole province, but if things look like here in Quebec City, well, that pretty much sums it.

Quebec got lots of cash? That doesn't mean anything. Expect things to go back to normal sooner than later. I can't quite speak for individuals (especially when most of them act like they would prefer to be shot rather than state a clear political position), of course, but I think it's pretty safe to assume that most do not have an opinion. As for the politicians here, they will never be happy, no matter how much they get. And it's not like they're going to spend the money wisely, either.

    *Sigh*, I hate people, sometimes...

Granted, maybe I'm just a getting a bit too much pessimistic.

Anyway, as for my personnal opinion on the matter: I don't think it won't make much of a difference. Money, no matter how much, will still be spent irresponsibly by our leaders. And since they don't give a damn about anything other than themselves, it's not like they will shut up either. Rather than looking for positive and creative solutions, and on how to use the money they finally got to sustain solid, long-term plans, they'll just waste the money, then go whine for some more, while trying at the same time to get independance from Canada. "Kill all the lawyers", said Shakespeare. "Please don't forget the politicians", I say.
