Just a reminder that it's best to post only a short quote from any article you want to point out to the rest of Vive's readers. Reprinting entire articles without permission is a violation of copyright, and even extensive quoting may cross the line. We try to keep an eye on this as moderators and editors but please do keep this in mind while posting.
Remember, anyone can post to Vive--just click "Contribute" on the top menu and fill out the form. Your original thoughts and comments are always welcome.

Yes, you can copy the entire article, but our rule of thumb is to only post 1/3 of the article - with an appropriate link! (Don't forget the link!)
Sometime the policy of the site allows for the entire article to be quoted so long as it contains that link. Usually I will check their policy to see if I can do this if I am unfamiliar with it.
Sites I can guarantee will only get the 1/3 treatment include the CBC, Globe and Mail, Canada.com etc. I try to stay away from 'Subscription only' links because we don't subscribe - therefore we don't have the right to reprint the article.
"So far as quoting articles in REPLYS or the FORUM which editors do not necessarily see first are such quotes ok if a source is given?"
Yes, but the fair use must be respected also. Copyright holders have contacted us to remove such posts in the past (where the whole article was posted, with or without a link) and we have obliged them by removing the entire post. The Forum is different because posts can be edited to comply with fair use, but comments on the main page cannot be edited.
"I am aware that “fair use” is not a clear and easy thing to define and I am sure that all of us here do not wish to put Vive or the editors in any difficult situations."
I thank you for that. We usually find the 1/3 rule works well. If a copyright holder has a problem with it, we deal with it as it arises.
