George Webster, the island's environment minister, said while it's not illegal for islanders to import cans -- only the sale of them is -- P.E.I. was losing millions annually in lost sale revenues. He estimates lifting the ban will add $1 million to $2 million annually into provincial coffers.
"One would draw the conclusion if the customer wants to buy his soft and sport drinks in aluminum cans, why would we interfere with that?" Webster said.
The deposit for the cans will be set between five and 10 cents and harmonized with deposits from New Brunswick and Nova Scotia to prevent "cross-border shopping."
The change means islanders may potentially lose something else: the nostalgic pop flavours of yesteryear.
