For example, Cannon's chief of staff, Paul Therrien, was an aide to Mulroney in February 1998 when Mulroney met Schreiber in a private suite at the Savoy, a luxury hotel in Zurich. Therrien has said he did not stay for the meeting between the two men and doesn't know what was discussed.
Cannon told reporters it's Chretien who should be answering questions about Liberal Leader Stephane Dion's comment that the $2.1 million settlement might have been obtained "under false representation" and would probably not have been paid if the government had known about the cash payments.
Eddie Goldenberg, Chretien's former top adviser, said last week that federal government lawyers would probably not have recommended the settlement had they known about Mulroney's financial dealings with Schreiber.
