As well, the news this week that the U.S. was reducing softwood-lumber duties was quickly spun by Liberals as proof that their tough talk on free trade had paid off. Like children, Americans can't vote in this election, but that doesn't mean they're not a big part of the campaign.
EKOS polling firm president Frank Graves says it makes sense for Liberals to try to ride on current anti-U.S. sentiment in Canada, specifically because it appeals to the party's prime demographic targets: small-l liberals, well-educated Canadians and youth. These are people who might be tempted to vote for the NDP, especially in the key Liberal battlegrounds of Ontario and British Columbia.
Martin's cultivation of the anti-U.S. vote this week, then, has to be seen in the same vein as his public courting of Canadian Auto Workers president Buzz Hargrove last week.
If Martin can't get a majority, he needs the NDP to prop him up more officially than in the last Parliament. So this is an appeal with an eye to before and after the Jan. 23 vote — a strategy and a contingency plan, all in one.

>>> OTTAWA—Liberals say there was no deliberate attempt to drag Canada-U.S. relations into the federal election at the end of this week.<<<
Yeah, they always tell the truth too… Don’t believe your eyes, believe what we tell you to. It’s the same old, tired routine. Haul out the US bogeyman to manipulate the voters through fear and bigotry.
>>— all helped Martin show that he was no friend of the current White House administration or the more right-wing U.S. culture overall.<<<
This is where it all pays off for them, the years of finger pointing, blaming, and railing against the scapegoat. This is where voters will be expected to “prove” they are good Canadians by voting not for the liberals but for the misguided idea that they are somehow voting against the United States.
>> Like children, Americans can't vote in this election, but that doesn't mean they're not a big part of the campaign.<<<
…As the ever present bogeyman… The vilification of the USA as center of all things evil is used to push voters in the direction they want to push you and the few dollars (The table scraps that they let you have) us used to pull you. It is the OLDEST method for demagoguery there is. How can anyone still fall for it?
>>> EKOS polling firm president Frank Graves says it makes sense for Liberals to try to ride on current anti-U.S. sentiment in Canada, specifically because it appeals to the party's prime demographic targets…<<<<
Can’t you see? This is all plotted out. They are selling you a product. They have polls and focus groups and test audiences… Even catch phrases like “Deep Integration™. They identify something that they can utilize, in this case the rivalry that exists between the USA and Canada (The once good natured rivalry which was more of a joke then a bitter, bigoted grudge.) and they exploit it. They fan the resentment, focus on the friction that happens in all relationships and claim that only they will stand up for you against the big oppressive foe.
>>> Martin's cultivation of the anti-U.S. vote this week..<<<<
The exasperating thing is that it is going to work! Again! The Government has used this (and other trite little tricks) to remove all accountability for itself. They can and will get away with whatever they feel like getting away with because they KNOW that they can always fall back on the resentment that they have helped to create. In the mean time they treat the citizens of Canada with utter contempt. Why not? They have nothing to worry about.
>> Had the government still been standing, in other words, it's far from clear that Martin would be so pointed in his bid to carve out a position so provocatively challenging to the U.S. <<<
In other words, when he is done vilifying the USA to get himself and his pack of sleazy, useless crooks put back into office it will be back to business as usual.
>> New Democrats, however, believe the strategy is too obvious by half.<<<
Not the ones I have seen posting here!
>> Conservatives also realize that Liberals are using the Canada-U.S. issue with an eye to drawing sharp distinctions with them.<<
You mean those who have been portrayed as “sell outs” and “lackeys” by the steadfast, noble defenders of Canada “becoming the 51st state”… Only a “traitor” would even consider hearing the words that come from their mouths…
>>Like the NDP, they believe it's too obvious a strategy. That doesn't mean it doesn't work, though, Conservative strategist Goldy Hyder says, candidly.
"Yes, of course it's strategic and while it may win elections, does it actually advance the country's and therefore the people's interests?" Hyder says.<<<<<
"Yes, of course it's strategic and while it may win elections, does it actually advance the country's and therefore the people's interests?"
Obviously not, but the thing is: Taking the high road doesn’t get you elected in Canada, sadly.
>> "It's high time that we define ourselves — and our public policy positions — by who we are and what we believe as opposed to who we are not and what we don't believe,"<<<
It is agonizing to see such clarity and wisdom repeatedly voted down by the manipulated rubes… More so to know it is going to happen again.

yeah, there's LOTS more....wonder just what DID ever become of it all (eh)???
The Toronto Star is to the Liberals what Fox News is to the Republicans.
a rabid RepubliNEO-CON, posting in a hyper-pro-Harper-anti-left manner.
What does that mean ? What is the effect ?
It means the Conservative/Republican agenda
is oblivious to the observable effects of it's policy,
and that it functions in a blind and insane
manner.A rancid dogma.
The effect ? NDP support goes up by 1% for every
10 posts made by the insane right-wing RepubliNEO-CON.
>>What does that mean ? What is the effect ?<<<
I wrote 1 post on this thread, the hidden one that starts with "PLEASE NOTE". Insted of writing me off as a "neocon" why don't you tell me as to where I am wrong.
For example, you often say things like, "Can't you see!?" and "You just don't get it, do you?" and the person reading it can almost hear the silent "you idiot" at the end. Calling people "manipulated rubes" does not make them receptive to the few points you might have that are valid.
Election time is one of the rare moments when Canadians think and talk actively about our national values, and I'm reveling in that exchange right now. Canadians have a right and responsibility to be concerned about their national identity. Their population is smaller and, therefore, so are their cultural institutions and products. Resisting American influence is a valid part of maintaining our values - which are VERY different from yours (that is a fact, not a value judgment).
I am guessing that your post is hidden because it left me feeling like a worthless peon, not a respected fellow human being.
Merry Christmas
---- Vote NDP! (Or for anyone else that will rescue us from NAFTA!)
As for American/Canadian relations, I'm may not agree with the American administration (both past and present), but I sure as hell would never vote for the Liberals! If you don't like the States, that's your choice. But I'd vote NDP then if I were you. The Liberal Party is the biggest continental integration party in North America.
