The problem, of course, is best posed by an American. Enter Bob Ivie, professor of communication and culture at Indiana University. It's he who teases out and delineates the "weakness".
Hardly a decent article, just more of the same spurious allegations that honestly don't hold water. A real war on dissenters can be seen in places like Iran, Zimbabwe or Cuba, places where they're systematically beaten or killed. Imagining such things are happening in the U.S. doesn't make it so regardless of how much you want to believe that they are. The Guardian newspaper has about as much credibility as the Enquirer, better to post from a decent source than blow your argument.
I suppose poverty, crime, no healthcare and no jobs is also an imaginary problem in the U.S. I have read many good articles in the Guardian, and I find the reporting much better,& less censored than some of what we get in North America.

Anonymous you are an apologist for big business and big business has the governments of Canada and the USA in its back pockets. Go sell your yoyo papers somewhere else.
The article points out that educated people in the USA ( the people with the degrees ) are not doing their part, they are not standing up and demanding that the constitution be adhered to. In fact, they are quite similar to most of the degree holding people in Canada, the only thing they stand up for is to be first in line for the dinner table. That is the extent of their political philosophies.
Ashcroft is planning a crackdown on internal dissent though, there are too many people asking why no investigation was carried out before the evidence was carted off and destroyed from New York city after Sept. 11, 2001. They want no questions asked, right Anonymous ?
Guess anon there doesnt read daily news reports - the NY DA in advance of Novembers Republican Convention wants to criminalize dissent - otherwise lock away fellow Americans for peaceful protests.

Look at the overhanded response to PEACEFUL protesters in Miami during the FTAA meetings.

I am stunned at how far some apologists will go to cover over the problems eminating from the US under George Bush.

To do so they always try to elude to problems with other countries. Well anon - some of the biggest human rights violators in the world are cut and dried US puppet regimes - aka - Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, Israel, Yemen, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey, and on and on and on.

Yes other nations have problems, but the world leader in abuses and supporter of abusive nations is none other than your southern heroes.

---
If there was ever a time for Canadians to become pushy - now is the time - for time is running out on this nation called Canada.
Let`s see... Dixie Chicks losing air play from their comments about George Bush, people who take out the wrong books from American libraries having the FBI on their doorstep the next day, and protesters who are supposed to have free speech and the right to protest in America are hustled off into little holding cells called 'free speech zones.' In other words, you can`t protest near the limousine parade. Only Bush supporters can. The rest are located about a half a mile away. Oh, and did I mention how that last election was fixed? Supreme court appointed president. Very good! Hail to the Thief!
America's war on dissenters? REALLY? I can name at least 10 politically "radical" or dissident websites that have been targeted by the FBI or other intelligence agencies since 9-11. Most of these sites are moderately anti-war. I used to write for an American anarchist site (www.raisethefist.com) that has been removed due to legal ramifications. Its 20 year-old founder, Sherman Austin, is currently serving a year in a federal prison because he chose (in anarchist tradition) not to censor the newswire on the site. Someone anonymously posted bomb-making directions and the FBI decided to knock on the then 18 year-old Sherman's door. Sherman can't even touch a computer for three years after he's been released. Open your mouth just once to prove your point and they'll prove the point for you by trying to shut you up. Oh! I better keep quiet . . .

Hey, Vitali, don`t go to the states. With a name like that you`ll be labelled a pinko-commie terrorist! But i`m seriously, though, thinking of naming my next pet Vladimir! Oh, I also own a red CCCP hockey jersey from the 80`s.
Yeah. I actually just got back from the former Soviet Union with my arms full of Bolshevik "curiosities". A USSR flag, a painting of Lenin, some Red Army medals, things like that. Even though I was born in BC, I always get asked where I'm from because of my name . . . Guess I'm just paying the price for my ancestors being from Ukraine and England. Oh well. I'M Canadian. Peace.

I recognise your name, and the situation you descrbe above. If it sucked any harder for Mr. Austin, it would have 'Hoover' written on the side.

From your analysis, I guess I'd better start reading the Enquirer.
