Oil Thirst From China Adds Fuel To Trade Tussle

Posted on Saturday, October 15 at 11:34 by Perturbed
The Chinese oil ambitions in Canada, which intensified yesterday when Mr. McCallum met two of China's most powerful oil executives, are a key element in the Liberal government's aggressive push to diversify Canada's energy sales away from its traditional U.S. markets in the aftermath of the softwood-lumber dispute. Despite denials from Ottawa, the government's new strategy of pitching oil to China is widely seen as a pressure tactic against Washington after its refusal to comply with the NAFTA softwood ruling. The Americans are ignoring a ruling by a North American free-trade agreement panel that U.S. tariffs on softwood lumber are illegal under U.S. trade law. The New York Times this week described Ottawa's campaign as "a series of subtle threats" against the administration of President George W. Bush . . . "China is likely to increase its oil imports from Canada by acting as an investor, rather than simply as a customer, Mr. McCallum said. This could include takeover bids and greenfield investments, as well as other forms of investment. "They do not feel limited by how much economically can be sent to China. They could well make investments for sale in third markets. They're also interested in joint ventures or minority holdings or strategic alliances with Canadian companies. They could team up with Canadian companies in joint ventures to enter into production which isn't necessarily destined for China." www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/ArticleNews/TPStory/LAC/20051014/CHINA14/TPNational [Proofreader's note: this article was edited for spelling and typos on October 15, 2005]

Oh, well, at least they won't be Americans buying up Canada, eh?

Do you think, pseudo-communist China would hesitate to invade us(or anyone for that matter), if their need for oil became to great? I mean, we all know they dont give 2 shits about human life, so all that could stop them is a physical inabilty to do so, right?

You misunderstood me--I meant China owning us is even worse, and no I don't think they can be trusted--their government is desperate and insane.

Racism, "soft" or overt, and unsupported diatribe doesn't add much to intelligent discussion. Try changing the word "China" to "Amerika" in some of these "anonymous" comments, and you might have something approaching the current reality. The "communism" rhetoric doesn't resonate in Canada very much. Joseph McCarthy didn't strike me as a particularly sane or intelligent man but the insidious weeds he sowed continue to pop up everywhere. Give it a break! Amerika is the one with a track record of invasion and an unbridled greed for energy.

Yes but America, would never invade us, because our government will always capitualte to them. Also, Amerika, doesnt have the same level of brutality and totalitarian control in its government, at least not yet anyways. Its to bad that "communist" rhetoric doesnt get much attention, I mean how many people do they have to kill before they give a shit? China's communist government has killed something like 80 million through starvation and removing political dissidents. Am I supposed to ignore that, because they say they are nice now on TV? What about the organ trade? What about the flesh of dead chinese prisoners going to make beauty supplies for European countries? I know how bad Amerika is, but that is beyond anything they have ever done on a collective scale.
And we dont even have the numbers from the "communist" totalitarian government of North Korea. Im sure its in the 10s of millions as well. Just because the Prime Minister gets on TV and kisses some diplomatic ass, we are supposed to forget how horrible that totalitarian regime is? Give a fucking break....

Soft racism my ass. Why have So Many chinese form Hong Kong immigrated here in the last 5 years? Why have so many chinese christians come to Canada over the last 50 years? All to escape the persecution of a totalitarian government. You dont see North Americans, fleeing to China to have thier rights and beliefs protected? The only people who flee to China, are North Koreans, and they use it to try and get elsewhere.

So don't call racism, and ignore the horror of a totalitarian regime, chalking up resistance to that as some form of racism or Macarthyism. What a joke...

Anything to stay away from any dealing with the States, I buy it! China -or any other partner- is a better deal, at least they haven't broken the law and laughed arrogantly in our face, doing it! Besides the Chinese are not about to invade us, because they know that, should they tried, the US won't let them; so we are in a win-win situation.

"because the U.S. won't let them". showing your inferiority complex with that comment, need the U.S. to hold your hand?? When you go to the bathroom do you need an American to help you wipe your ass too? Canada and Canadians can take care of themselves, so cut it with your stupid comment. from a Canadian without an inferiority complex.

Yes we could in theory protect ourselves, if our millitary was not in the sorry ass state that it is at the moment. I mean seriously, right now its a joke. Most of the new stuff they have ordered is still years away.
Who knows, maybe by the time China could become a serious threat, we will have remedied that sillyness.
