"In general, I think all the ports are pretty supportive of the amendments that have been proposed," said Capt. Al Soppitt, president and CEO of the Saint John Port Authority.
"It's a major step forward."
Soppitt said the Saint John Port Authority has major infrastructure issues that need to be dealt with - particularly its facilities in the city's lower west side.
"We need some major work done there in the years to come," he said, adding the rough estimate for the work is $100 million.
As it stands, the port cannot apply for direct federal subsidies for such work under the act, though in recent years the federal government has found ways around the Marine Act in order to support the Pacific Gateway initiative and to bolster port security efforts across the country.
