Mainstream Media Fooled Again

Mansbridge points to the “relatively free elections in Afghanistan and Iraq” without commenting on how those elections served to do nothing but cement into power the appointed American puppets. He indicates that there is a hint of democracy in Egypt and Saudi Arabia although it must be a quiet hint, more like a whisper, and certainly nothing that the locals have noticed. And he speaks of the election of Mahmoud Abbas in Palestine as though American policy in the Middle East was somehow responsible for the job vacancy that Abbas was able to fill. Was it? Finally, there is the people power in Lebanon where a prime minister was sent packing 10 days ago only to be called back to the job today (March 10) by parliamentarians who have chosen to ignore what Mansbridge implies was the will of the people. If the departure of Omar Karami was democracy in action, how will the media speak of the return of the pro-Syria leader? Still, Bush’s Middle East policy is being hailed, or at least grudgingly praised, as successful by media all round the world. Unfortunately, there is a vast audience of people uneducated or unsophisticated enough to accept this codswallop. Let’s recall the pretend reasons for invading Iraq in the first place: weapons of mass destruction. When those weapons, which the highest officials of the United States and Britain assured us were there, couldn’t be located, the secondary reason of getting rid of a bad guy became the mantra. And once he was toppled, well then the real reason became that the Iraqi people needed to have democracy. It can certainly be argued that some Iraqis are delighted to be rid of Saddam Hussein, but there are likely very few who are pleased with the ongoing manslaughter brought about by this ‘liberation’. Even if we can agree to dismiss the obviously fluid thoughts of the American administration, how does anyone conclude that: invading Iraq has lead, or is leading, to democracy anywhere; that democracy actually is raising its head anywhere near the Middle East; that the United States had any democracy to export in the first place? The best anyone anywhere should expect from American intervention is a shift from control by some unpleasant leader (and a fair number of pleasant ones, too) to control by some unpleasant corporation, usually with strong American roots. How, exactly, is that a move toward democracy? Whether any change in the rights of citizens in the Middle East comes about, nothing implanted by the United States is going to bring democracy. Most everyone would agree that democracy means that the people are fairly represented in the formulation, implementation, and evaluation of all social and economic policies; that elections are held freely with those elected being responsible to the people, not to faceless corporations. Americans don’t have that in their own country, and they are certainly not going to be implementing it in the nations they hope to hold as vassal states. If America was really interested in bringing democracy to people anywhere, including at home, they would be promoting policies that fostered some fundamental shifts in the world’s thinking: • They would be trying to set standards that collapsed such organizations as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the World Trade Organization. • They would be mandating corporate responsibility and using the courts to revoke the concept of ‘corporate personhood’. • They would be pushing for rigid controls over currency speculation in order to protect the economies of countries devastated by this form of Hold ’Em poker. • They would be urging the cancellation of Third World debt and the enactment of international covenants designed to protect the economic integrity and sovereignty of all nations. • They would be promoting international trade agreements that have human rights protections as their primary purpose, that provide for ‘fair trade’, as opposed to the euphemistically-named "free trade." • They would insist on pushing toward sustainable development, including protection for workers, trade unions, the environment, women, minorities. And those agreements would not undermine the ability of each nation, state or local community to meet its citizens' social, environmental, cultural or economic needs. • They would promote socially responsible investment. • They would work toward a better and more just world by adhering to the long-standing agreements and treaties which were designed for the advancement of all, not just the United States. • They would agree to work within multilateral projects as equal partners. • They would pay what they owe the United Nations. And then accept that this organization is intended to make a better world, not a wealthier United States. But America is promoting and supporting precisely the opposite of each point above. And for the mainstream press to suggest that anything fomented by George Bush is going to lead to democracy anywhere, including the Middle East, is an incredible blight upon their profession. It may very well turn out that the invasion of Iraq does spark changes in the Middle East. But with the Americans behind it, the last thing anyone should be expecting is democracy. The United States has never wanted any of its client states to be democratic: in a democracy, the will of the people might not be what you want it to be. But a good solid corporate state, something like Benito Mussolini tried to build, now that’s something Washington can work with. It’s worked pretty well for them at home. So when journalists spout that maybe Bush was "right," the only context in which that could conceivably be true is in the phrase "right-wing theocrat." And that is not something that should be celebrated. [Proofreader's note: this article was edited for spelling and typos on March 16, 2005]

Yes...and the Left was right to say nothing as Saddam murdered Shiites, Marsh Arabs and Kurds. The Left was right in deciding that it was best to trust Saddam regarding WMD's -- rather than the intelligence services of every major Western nation and the UN. Indeed, wagering the lives of Americans on the words of Saddam was a good idea -- even if it were rejected by the American people.

The problem with the Left having no moral authority (ask an Iraqi Shiite, Marsh Arab, Kurd or any liberal living under Arab totalitarianism) is that people simply dismiss what you say. It becomes irrelevant banter meant to impress at coffee houses or at Leftist universities or at rallies to support totalitarians that share a hatred of the US. Those living under oppression know that you care little for their life, their deaths or their suffering if it cannot be used for anti-American rhetoric. Islamic fascist realize you are a great tool to be exploited until the great Caliphate is established -- at which time you will be deposited in the nearest mass grave. Certainly, you are as much of a joke to Islamic totalitarians as you are to those who believe in freedom and the individual.

My main thought is, when will the Left actually start caring about the lives of oppressed people rather than their pathetic identity? Gays in Saudi Arabia and Palestine are wondering when you will insist that they not be tortured and executed. When will that happen? When will you stand up for those murdered in the Sudan? When will you reckognize that every individual has a right to a certain degree of freedom, along with accountability? When will you stand for women's rioghts in the Arab world and elsewhere? Is it enough to be a mere sychophant of a political identity that adds no value to anyone or anything? Is it any wonder that you are irrelevant? Relevancy does not come via intellectual and moral cowardice in the US.

Don't worry, however. America will do the heavy lifting of bringing freedom to the world as we always have. We don't need thanks or praise or even gratitute. We certainly don't need Canada or France or other apologists of totalitarians. If we undertake an endeavor that requires cowardice, moral relativism and artificial humanism...then, we will give Canada a call.

Awesome. If I agreed with this post,
I wouldn't even care that there are no facts within it.

Wow, such an intellectual giant! All you have to do, is label someone as "Anne Coulter" or "Rush" or as a "neocon" or "Zionist", etc...and you can feel some degree of superiority. Impressive! This tactic doesn't help erase the conclusion that your an intellectual weakling...but it will get you high fives at the coffee house.

Are you saying its not a fact that gays are oppressed in Saudi Arabia and throughout the Arab world and the Canadian Left says nothing? How about that Iraq had been at war for 30 years (ask Kurds, Shiites, Marsh Arabs) and the Left didn't protest or even show concern-- until the US involvement? OK, how about the fact that nothing is said of women's rights in the region or Syria's occupation of Lebanon or the persecusion of fellow liberals? These aren't facts? Hmmmm...I suppose facts are only considered if they support the pathetic, anti-individualism, anti-American identity you've constructed for yourself. Yes, "facts" are those things that enable you to project a mythical moral superiority and sense of courage. "Facts" can only come through your state-run media or the state-run media of the Mideast.

Here we go again - another rightwinger spouting what they heard elsewhere - its all blatent lies or misinterpretations of reality. Way to go! Bet you are really proud of yourself tagging the left to Saddam! WOOWEE! Hot dog partner!

But one little bit of history for you - Saddam was the creation of a rightwing American government who said and did nothing while Saddam murdered and started a war with his neighbour. Damn bloody facts - get in the way eh?

    Trolls!

  7. Mon Mar 14, 2005 8:34 pm
How about the fact that the current US defence secretary sold arms to that nasty Saddam so that he could kill all those people? He (Rumsfeld) was happy to shake hands with the, then, defender of all things just. Be happy, we are killing the whole world, why worry who we do it to first?

"My main thought is, when will the Left actually start caring about the lives of oppressed people rather than their pathetic identity?"

Hey Ann - nice try! Gitmo - Abu Grahib - Rendition - patriot act - why no mention troll?

Supporting such dictators as Egypt, Kazakstan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Kuwait and on and on and on. You stupid fools will try to peg your actions on the left, but you fail because you don't even know what you are talking about! Better still, you ignore reality and try to claim Bush the war dodger is bringing freedom to the Middle East. What a joke!

The US tells Syria to get out of Lebanon - a country they were invited into, yet says sweet f'all to Israel over the occupied territories. Where is righteous indegnation there troll? Huh? Gays in Saudi Arabia are on your radar but you ignore the millions suffering under other US sponsored dictatorships or occupation. I know, I know, Faux News doesn't talk about those kinds of things, so it's hard to repeat what you don't hear elsewhere...

Rightwingers like the one posting here today are experts at the rightwing talking points. There is no fact behind any of it. It's all assertions and double talk. THis one is excellent at it, and probably spends lots of time at freeper land and watching closely everything on Faux News. He/she has it down, but too bad it's all bunk. Message for the troll, your crap don't sell here - we are educated and know more than your fellow zombies.

Now I await the usual cut and paste responses - "socialism is communism, you love Saddam, your with the terrorists, you hate freedom... blah blah blah." Save yourself the calories and go do it at freeper land, they love the reassurance of fellow zombies.

Moral relativism...how surprising! Indeed, that absolves you from any accountability as a human being to the 1.2 million killed by Saddam-- or the millions raped and tortured. Yes, that's exactly what the Shiites and Marsh Arabs and Kurds liked to hear-- as you protested their liberation. Of course, you left out the more significant support offered to Saddam by Chirac, Germany, Russia and the Arab states. Why is that? Oh yeah, making your anti-American point was more important than providing context for your arguement...Similar to how your anti-American rhetoric is more important than the lives of Iraqis, Palestinians, Saudis, Lebanonese, ect. Inspiring!

Yes, the laundry list of every questionable thing for the last 200 years. Brilliant and predictable! I don't know how Grenada got thrown in there but I suppose you came across a negative aspect of this action from al Jazeera or other state-run media outlet. Anyhow, I am content in knowing that my country evolves and has established it greatness in every area of human endeavor. Americans are even better at anti-Americanism than Canadians. In fact, you're probably quoting the plagarized work of Ward Churchill to make your point. What you've said is a re-has of every mediocre thinker to ever exist over the last 30 years. Come now, if you can't achieve relevance-- at least strive to be unique. Say what you wish about the US-- so long as your not a bore.

Getting back to the article, Paul Harris another great read! Thank you, if we don't pay attention to the events as they are and not as we wish they would be, we will become part of the problem, mindless sheep following the corporate led media. Thank you for keeping it real!

This troll is just another perfect example of talking like a rightwinger - blame everyone for your own mistakes. When they don't believe it, just say it again, and again, and again. It doesn't matter if it is all false, it doesn't matter to the rightwing.

For a perfect example of how these people think and in turn write for the world to laugh at see:
'How to write like a conservative' It's a hoot - you can see every step here with these rightwingers. Its like they all go to the same school for the indoctrinated!

  14. Mon Mar 14, 2005 9:14 pm
Exactly! And by the mainstream media failing everyone, we see the responses we see here today with the uniformed spouting the most insane comments. I pity them really, for they don't even know they have been conned. They believe what they read, and when you throw in such media outfits like Faux News and CanWest Global, who go out of their way to distort the message, you get what you get - denizens of the false message.
