Jack Layton on the Question of Reforming the Bank of Canada: "Absolutely. We have in our possession, but we've squandered it under Mulroney and Martin, the capacity to have some impact on the way our economy unfolds. Take a look at the high dollar right now. The Bank of Canada should be using its influence to keep the dollar lower." (my camera shut off at this point)
Jack Layton pointing out how critical climate change is: “There are species on this planet that are succumbing to climate change now. And we are going to be one of those species one of these days if we don’t get our act together.”
Jack Layton on accusations that the NDP is fiscally irresponsible: “That's a false accusation... If you look at parties in government in Canada, it’s very interesting. The NDP, when in government, has the best record of any political party in terms of running balanced budgets or better. Better than the Liberals. The Liberals, 80% of the time they are in power, run deficits in the last generation, the last 25 years. The Tories, when they’re in power, run deficits, I think, 65% of the time. The NDP, when we have been in power, 58% of the time. So we have the best record. Our current provincial governments have the best record across the country, with the exception of Alberta, which has a special situation. We have a policy of balanced budgets each and every year. That’s the world I come from – municipal government, where you have to balance budgets.”
Jack on the US's Unilateralist foreign policy: “There’s another super power and that’s the people of the world speaking out together and raising the pressure on governments around the world.”
Jack on the US's seemingly illogical decision to go ahead with Missile Defense: “There’s a huge lobby for spending on the contracts to produce these missile systems. It’s exactly what Eisenhower warned us against. The President, also a Republican, said ‘Watch out. This military industrial complex will always create new fears which then you have to respond to by buying their products.’ And the US has gotten into a huge deficit. And that is driving up the Canadian dollar. And that is forcing Canadian workers out of work. So this policy actually has a concrete economic impact on the daily lives of Canadians. So we have to work against it. If we put Canadian flags on those missiles, even if it’s just figuratively, we are signing our own death warrants.”
Jack Layton on Education: “We support there being a national post-secondary education act that puts the funding for post-secondary education into an envelope so that it can’t be raided by the provinces. That’s number one… Secondly, our main focus is on tuition fees and on replacing loan programs and these roll-of-the dice scholarship programs with grant programs based on peoples’ needs. Anything that moves in that direction, we will support.”
“The countries that are going to pull away from us, and already are, are the ones that provide virtually free university education. Because, they understand that you want to remove every barrier to young people having all the educational capabilities that they can get. And that way, you have a labour force that’s able to respond to what’s unfolding as people go through lots of change.”

“The countries that are going to pull away from us, and already are, are the ones that provide virtually free university education.”
The countries that aren't pulling away from us are the ones that believe in class war (not necessarily the countries gov't but the co-conspirators within them). Where the rich are educated and the poor, even with funding are behind the game, in debt, and without opportunity.
“There’s another super power and that’s the people of the world speaking out together and raising the pressure on governments around the world.”
I think Jack has been doing some reading Anarcho, some anarchist readings:
"By December, support for Washington's war plan scarcely reached 10 percent almost anywhere outside of the US, according to international polls. Two months later, after enormous worldwide protests, the press reported that "there may still be two superpowers on the planet: the United States and world public opinion" ("the United States" here meaning state power, not the public or even elite opinion)." - Hegemony or Survival pg 4.
Since Noam Chomsky is the closest things we have these days to a reputable anarchist writer, and since Jack Layton isn't the public, but, IS the closest thing we have that represents 'it' (The Public) and it's actual opinions: Shouldn't 'Anarchism's' first choice be voting for it's closest representation?
This is the system we have RIGHT NOW, so shouldn't 'we' (The Public) make it work for 'us' (The Public) instead of dismissing it all together?

Canada MUST abrogate NAFTA. Will the U.S. renegotiate an agreement that suits them fine? No. Jack is either trying to avoid scrutiny of the press, or he's an idiot.
As for money reform, he talks about our debtr-based economy like it's "oh well, we haven't been..... controlling our economy a little bit," plays it down like it's a minor issue, and Happy go-lucky Jack might change that a little.....
JACK--this privatized money is not an accident, and you will face a huge fight to change that.....God I can't stand that guy.
Jack got his PhD in foreign investment, so he's either a puppet or naive, probably both.
His idiot "who me" act is really tiring.

Make it sound as easy as you type it Perturbed. So tomorrow everything would be different? Maybe Jack isn't being PC...he's being realistic. Who is your man with the plan?
Ottawa won't fall to the anarchist tomorrow, or the next day, or even the one after that. We are in such an apathetic hole that we can't get out by jumping anymore. We need to build foot and hand holes to climb our way out.
Jack Layton is playing politics. That's what politicians do. People aren't going to be responsive to immediate changes. Look at the smoking ban article, suggest the stopage of the sale of cigarettes and everyone jumps on you like you are a fascist. Imagine what would happen if Jack Layton suggested we just 'scrap' NAFTA this Friday. I think you are thinking in your idealogical bubble and not thinking about how things actually come together. The horrible big picture.
The fact of the matter is we are screwed right now. It's going to take people like Jack Layton a lot more than a day to make change. People need to be coddled, and as much as that turns the stomach of people like you and me, it has to be done.
As for fixing the interest rates, the currency, etc. I don't think that was Layton, I think that was the private banks, their lobbyists and the politicians from the past 40 years. What would your suggestion be?
Perturbed who is making a difference these days in Canadian politics? Who would your ideal replacement be? What could Layton do to make things better for you, other than being more direct and less PC?
[keep in mind I am trying to see where you are coming from no offence intended (whoops! that might be a little to PC for you)]
I think people need to stop blowing so hard and start thinking really hard, past the point of: "What is screwing us over...ok... I am against it, and I want everyone to know."

The reason I think Jack's actions are a problem is I disagree with those who think you have to "play politics." That's what the Liberal do--because they're usually lying.
If Jack Layton means what he says--he should come out forcefully. I actually think his timidness is hurting him and is seen as the "typical NDP," no backbone, just like the Liberals.
Did being blunt hurt Diefenabaker?
As for NAFTA, I agree there would be a backlash, but mostly by the business community. Rachnhers know better now.
If we scrapped NAFTA it wouldn't be anarchy, because our rules would immediately revert to the WTO rules (formerly GATT) that served us better before, because disputes settlements are not U.S. controlled, an objective country rules on the issues, and we only lost twice in the past, and won many times.....David Orchard is the prophet on this issue.
Back to being blunt, I think Layton should take more chances and throw scrapping NAFTA out there. It IS a minority parliament, so although the other parties (including the BQ) probably support it mostly, he could help open the debate.
I do agree with you. I wish that politicians were a little more blunt. As all major changes in gov't over the years have either been through manipulative lies, or straight honest truth. Thanks for sharing your point of view. I do like Jack Layton very much, but I do see where you are coming from. I think that Layton is the only politician who's speaking anywhere near what I, personally, want to hear. I agree with you though that David Orchard is also along the same lines, with more urgency to his causes.
The one thing I don't like about Orchard is that he is not an NDP supporter. Yet, the NDP would be a great party for him. The Cons to me, even the PC, seems like they are on route to Americanization (not all, but a few key members). They are the ones going on and on about safety concerns, terrorists, and all the latest American propahanda!
He says that the Liberals need a contender in the next election. Then why not bring his strong opinions to the NDP where they would be widely accepted? I am sure he has been asked this question before...maybe someone knows the answer?
Why isn't Orchard NDP?

When an invasion can bring a country its freedom then unconsciousness is true happiness.
Orchard wants to win, and he thinks that Canadians vote "against" someone, and therefor etry to vote for a winner.....for example, if Orchard had been Conservative leaders last election, he might have gotten enough seats in Ontario and Quebec to win, assuming the west still supported him.
I could be wrong, but I think Orchard and his brother Grant used to be NDPers before 1998.
Oh well...that go with the winner mentality...isn't that playing politics too?
