The series opens Saturday with stunning exclusive aerial shots of the oil sands taken by world-renowned Canadian photographer Ed Burtynsky. These amazing shots are coupled with a revealing examination of how the oil sands have made Canada a global oil powerhouse and are causing Canadians coast-to-coast to rethink their views of each other, the environment, and the country's role on the international scene. The findings of an extensive poll examining Alberta's and the rest of Canada's attitudes about the oil sands will also be released.
Over the course of a week, a seasoned team of reporters - who travelled across Canada, to Texas, and as far away as Norway to report on the story - will look at the social, political, environmental and technological aspects of the oil sands mega-project, including:
- Canada's status as an energy superpower - even though it doesn't act like one;
- the opportunities and challenges Alberta faces;
- the environmental costs of mining an area the size of Florida;
- how the oil sands could save the world with a practical CO2 emissions solution that could massively reduce greenhouse gas emissions worldwide.
