Now We Should Be Really Worried About The 2006 Census

The government documents describing the study and its contents were obtained by the Electronic Privacy Information Center under Freedom of Information Act requests and posted on its Web site.

The NASA study highlights concerns among civil-liberties advocates that the government is gathering private information and even using its own data — contrary to repeated official assurances from the Census Bureau — to develop a data-mining system to prescreen all airline passengers.

It also comes in the wake of reports that JetBlue Airways gave a military contractor computer data on 1 million of its customers.

Bill Scannell, president of the group DontSpyOnUs.com, called the inclusion of census information "absolutely appalling."

"Information given by American citizens for reasonable demographics information has been turned around and used to spy on people. This sounds like East Berlin, circa '74," said Mr. Scannell, a privacy advocate. ...A color-coded threat assessment will be assigned to each passenger: green for standard security, yellow for additional screening and red to prevent the passenger from boarding a plane.

Security officials estimate the error rate at 4 percent to 8 percent, which Mr. Steinhardt said "means 4 [million] to 8 million Americans will mistakenly be labeled as terrorists."

Yes we should be worried and as yet no member of parliament has responded to my letters on this issue. Not even from the alternate parties! This really tells you that something big is going on here!

So, we were right. Census information is not safe in American hands. If the Americans can\'t trust that their data will be kept confidential, how can we? We should be screaming at the Canadian government--\"I told you so!\" And this is invaluable ammo in the fight to keep them from contracting the next census out to Lockheed Martin.

Disturbing and sickening. The penultimate proof.

One would think that the terrible track record that is unfolding before us would be enough to get the Federal Liberals to at least back off and think hard about what they are going to do. Alas - I dont hold out much hope for Paul Martin to make the right choice.

Quick excersise for everyone - take a moment and ask someone first if they know this about to happen and second, ask them what they think about it.

I usually get the same two responses - they dont know about it and they dont like once they know.

Conclusion to me leads to further education and action on behalf of those in the know. We can not expect the mass media to be a helpful partner. We can not expect the Conservative Party to help out. We can not expect most of the Liberal Party to help out. Action from everyday Canadians is about the only thing standing between our privacy and rampant militarization of our society. As its not only this issue we face but missile defence, intergration and forced trade as well.

If there was ever a time for Canadians to become pushy - now is the time - for time is running out on this nation called Canada.
