As well, the company has purchased land in nearby Petrolia, Ont., for a smaller, 10-megawatt venture, and another operation is in the planning stages for a site near Tilbury, Ont., east of Windsor. Those two sites are not as far advanced, but when completed, all three are expected to generate about 100 megawatts of electricity, enough to power 15,000 homes. According to the company's website, each sub-project contains thousands of solar panels, aimed to gather maximum sunlight and mounted in rows which are grouped in arrays. Each solar farm consists of many arrays spread over up to 102 hectares of land. ... http://www.financialpost.com/story.html?id=303865

"Each solar farm consists of many arrays spread over up to 102 hectares of land." which then becomes all but useless for anything else. Not a good use of space in my opinion, put the arays on top of a building that uses the power and the panels do not shade crop land and is close to the end users!!
Besides which the sunlight factor in Ontario makes them quite inefficient, the only reason the company has any chance of making money is because of the excessivly high price that Ontario has commited to pay for solar generated hydro from large arays. They are still dragging their feet on making it easy for small producers and homeowners to share their output on the grid however.

I agree that closer to consumers would mean less transmission line losses, but it sounds like in between the panels would be a great place to grow switchgrass. ;)

The shade means water doesn't evaporate as quickly, and grass grows quicker in those conditions.
