The UN has once again proved to be a non-performer in an emergency. Only Canada has proved less up to the challenge. It is unable to send troops or other aid because it has allowed its airlift capacity to wither away. The Russian aircraft it relies on for this purpose have been hired by other countries. So once again standing tall on the sidelines, Canada! And on a per capita basis, the Canadian contribution to relief efforts as measured by Amazon has been shamefully small. Who was it who said the world needs more Canada? I guess we won't be hearing much from him in the future. When it comes to talk in a general sense, however, I expect to find Canada leading the pack. Look for the usual stuff about its decency and how the world looks up to Canada.

The UN is salivating at the prospect of getting their hands on the billions raised in relief funds - too bad for them that we all know they can't be trusted after their profiteering from sanctions they imposed on Iraqis.

The UN should be hired to do specific tasks on tight budgets for the Tsunami relief effort and that's all, the effort itself is too important to be left up to the most corrupt and incompetent organization on the planet.

If we can't trust the UN then who can we trust? The USA? I don't think so.

The Canadian government is the most accountable option because at least we can keep closer tabs on them and vote out the bastards if they screw up. Or maybe just donating directly to trustworthy NGOs is the best option.

Sadly,it seems there will be corruption all around no matter who the money goes to. All we can do is try to limit the graft by giving to the best people.

I don't know where you're getting your numbers from but your beloved america has 10 times the population of Canada and if their contribution was 10 times the size, it would be around the 800 million mark. Not a paltry 350 million.

Uh, Amazon is a for-profit US-centric company. "As measured by amazon" means that they are measuring based on donations through their site. The donation feature was only added to non-US sites much later, meaning the US had a head start. And many canadians use amazon.com instead of amazon.ca, so there is little to no point in measuring the donations this way. Further, many people are probably choosing to donate in other ways, i.e. through humanitarian organisations and not through an online store.

Canadians are asking, why do americans hate us? They hate our freedoms: our freedom of religion, our freedom of speech, our freedom to disagree with each other.

On that note, the Canadian Red Cross is a MUCH better way to donate money. I just donated online through their site.
---
Canadians are asking, why do americans hate us? So the figures are being cooked . . . forgive me my suspicion that this is just more self-deception by Canadians. But when you're a Lilluputian, I suppose self-aggrandizment is a psycholgical necessity. What about the other point, the complete absence of any Canadian presence on the ground. Even Norway has people there.

another anon talking out of his ass - Canada has boots on the ground, with more to come, and has some the most respected volunteer forces in the region - but dont let facts get in your way troll.

'sanctions THEY imposed'. Anon talking without knowing the facts - but what else is new with the dittoheads on the right?

No nation pushed for the sanctions more than the US. It was not the UN it was the security council that ensured they stayed in place. but hey, once again, dont let reality stop you from bullshiting your way through life.

go to freedominion - they lap up the BS your spewing.

UN officials, their relatives & friends were raking in huge dollars by abusing the sanctions against Iraq - leftist posturing and excuses for this corruption only serve to diminish what little respect people used to have for leftist reactionaries.

Methinks that was our old buddy, JJ.

Otherwise he'd know that RCMP forensics team and the DART advance team has been on the ground there all week.

again more bs from said resident troll. if you actually looked and read something other than what you read and hear from pills limbaugh and bullshit oreilly you would know, no nation benefited more from the perceived 'oil for food scandal' than the US.

But yet again, don't let facts get in your way.

It's sad to see so many people jostling to use this horrible tragedy for their own benefit. From those slagging Canada to those slagging America to those slagging the United Nations. People, if you are so concerned GET OUT THERE and put your body on the line. Lead by example. 150,000 people are dead. Relatives in this country are desperate. Refugees will be arriving very soon and will need supplies, and help in Canada. Jabbering away on the sidelines is exactly what this troll-talk (trollk?) is really all about. Canada, US, and the UK have all been pushed aside by the very good people in Germany, Japan, and (most of all) Australia.

The UN is doing as much as the countries (Canada & America included) who comprise it allow. We are the UN. You and me and Bill "Mr. Smelly Pants" O'Reilly.

The big question is really -- where are the Arab nations? Where is China? I know this wouldn't make the top five disasters for China (in the past 100 years even), but if they want to join the world they better learn to pay up.

Want to bet any Canadians on the ground got there by hitchhiking on planes supplied by the good old USofA?
