The second broken promise was the failure to extend to five years the cooling-off period before Cabinet ministers, ministerial staff and senior public servants can become lobbyists after leaving office. In fact, unless Cabinet ministers put ministerial staff on a list, the staff person will be allowed, as they were already, to become a lobbyist one year after they leave their staff position.
The Prime Minister’s Office was also dishonest about the failure to keep this commitment in the February 6, 2006 news release it issued. The “Backgrounder” of the release, under the heading “Reinforcing Government Accountability”, made the false claim that the revisions to the Code:
“include a five-year ban on former ministers, ministerial staff and senior public servants from acting as lobbyists to the Government of Canada, a ban which cannot be waived or reduced by the Ethics Commissioner.” (SEE release at: http://pm.gc.ca/eng/media.asp?id=684)

In the world of economists wishful imagination becomes reality, because they firmly believe that "In competition individual ambition serves the common good". Even Leo Strauss said so, so it must be right.

You must admit that those who have followed the Straussian philosophy have been successful in their use of propaganda to promote a certain agenda. Do you believe that there may be some truth to their idea that the public are so lacking in intelligence that they can be fooled into accepting choices that are not in their own interests?
Harper is counting on the fact that the public will have forgotten about the broken promises by the next election especially if he can get to the polls before middle income Canadians realize that they have been sold smoke and mirrors.
The public doesn't lack the intelligence, but is too lazy to use what they have, because it is much easier to accept the status quo and hope for riches and everlasting life.
The commercials on TV are the best examples of human gullibility. I lived in Austria for 3 years after WW2 and have never heard a single word complaining against Hitler, apart from a few politicians. If Hitler had been alive and free to run in an election, he would have won majority without any question. The same for Stalin in Russia.
Democracies are not thrown over by outside enemies, but self destruct. People love dictators, because they free them from thinking for themselves.

In their figures a job is a job and over 20 hours a week is a job. When somebody has to have 2 or 3 minimum wage jobs to survive it is 2-3 jobs and the job market is booming.
When government statistics report a 4% unemployment rate it means at least 8%, or even 12% and makes no distinction between minimum wage and well paying jobs. There are large sedgments that are not counted, plus we have the "seasonally adjusted" figures, which, again cut out large numbers.
Lies, damn lies and statistics. I checked this out years ago when I was working on my efficiency principle, but since then the situation worsened, if anything.
The US lost 5.5 million well paying manufacturing jobs since Bush took over with his "free trade" mania. The same here, but we don't even have the figures.
This is why I'm constantly repeating that the neoclassical economic system is the biggest fraud and crime wave in human history. Whether this simple fact will ever sink in to people is not my problem, but I hope it will one day.
Of course, when we mention such unmentionables, we're called commie, pinko liberal socialists who hate the well earned profits of those who "work". On the computer, buying and selling stocks. Buying when companies firing and selling when they're hiring, or raising wages.

The public deserves what it is getting.I am sure you have spoken to many people about economics, trade and NAFTA.Ever notice how stunned people look? They would rather talk on a cell phone then do anything else.Lonely perhaps?
The public is just plain stupid. That is why th epols and business leaders are doing what they are doing. They KNOW they can get away with it.I have given up trying to explain NAFTA,debt financing, and perhaps voting for another party,to anyone. It is useless.People don't want to think.
