The State Of The World? It Is On The Brink Of Disaster

Posted on Thursday, March 31 at 11:35 by 4Canada
The report does not make jolly reading. The academics found that two-thirds of the delicately-balanced ecosystems they studied have suffered badly at the hands of man over the past 50 years. The dryland regions of the world, which account for 41 per cent of the earth's land surface, have been particularly badly damaged and yet this is where the human population has grown most rapidly during the 1990s. http://www.commondreams.org/headlines05/0330-04.htm

I don`t know, but maybe this has been known for some time now, and that`s why the wealthy power clans are grabbing it all up now at the expense of everyone else.

i saw this in the independent. if this isn't a wake-up call, i don't know what is. maybe if 2/3 of the ice on antarctica slid off into the ocean (as people were saying a few years ago) people might actually do something about it. has anyone else seen the pics of mt kilimanjaro, with no snow on it for the first time in 11000 years?<br />

if the people of the developed world found out about this stuff, i'm sure there would be a hell of a change, but with corporations having such influence, i'm not very optimistic. chomsky quotes in his most recent book a book on biology which said that the average life expectancy for a species is approximately 100,000 years, which is roughly the amount of time homo sapiens have been around. to quote roger waters, i think maybe "the human race is run".<p>---<br>"George Bush has declared the war on terrorism to be the cause of his generation. I just don't get why governments are so complacent about this. It really baffles me why we don't accept the evidence that the brightest people in our society are putting forth and the physical evidence that is plain to see. The political mood at the moment appears to side with assisted suicide. The general public seem to be understanding the issue more and more each day. I think the government is lagging, especially when they blame interested groups that want something to be done for scuttling anything being done. This is the worst kind of politics regarding an issue even the Pentagon recognizes as 'the' issue of our generation.

I have to disagree with you all. It's about the idea that these scientist that come up with this stuff are left or in other words liberal. The right wing are challenging those studies, saying they are slanted to the left once the data is interpreted. And the right wing have come up with their own studies to prove what they are saying as well.

Now the question is if we believe in all of this left leaning information. And the right wing have people believing in their studies. Who's to say which one are telling the truths? They can very easily say we are nuts. and we can easily say they are nuts. Yet when you realy look at it we are all completely sure of our beliefs.

And for me Kevin it doesn't take any scientist telling me one thing or another. It's simple. You kill the planet - you die. It's all about cause and effect.

I don`t care if one is left/right/centre.If you take alook at the world there is something wrong.Yes it may be natural, yet at the same time you have to look at how we are treating the planet.
Scientists do have there own agenda, but so does the corporate right. The track record of the right is not good. Both side do yell to get your attention, but the problems still persist. How about solving the problems.Smog.Clean drinking water.Over population.Suburban sprawl.Land fill.I don`t have the answers, but I agree with 4canada.You kill the planet, you die!

The main cause of environmental and human degradation is overcapitalization that sucks the life out of everything. As long as neoclassical market economics are being taught at our and the world's universities, there's no hope for any change for the better. Of course, like all pseudo religious, colonizing theories, the Friedmanite neoclassical, Austrian and Chicago School theory is basic fascism and carries the seeds of its own self destruction, as we can witness it in our lives and times. The bad part is that billions of people will suffer, millions will die when the inevitable collapse of this criminal theory comes.
Based on the idiocies of this theory, we live in an era of incredible monetary inflation, caused by bank deregulations, which is going into capital investments, demanding convertibility from governments, causing environmental and human destruction to maintain the value of the created, imaginary money. Until governments get up enough gumption to break their ties to big business and all self interest sectors, sack their neoclassical economic advisers and take back the right of money creation, we'll be going downhill at an uncontrolled, accelerating rate. There's no point in yammering over the effects without doing something about the causes. Ed Deak, Big Lake, BC.

    Good points!

Yes, but remember that at the exact moment that our world is no longer able to sustain human life, General Motors or some similar corporation come to our rescue and we'll all fly off to some distant galaxy to begin again.

So, in the interim, we should all feel free to party hearty and forget about tomorrow!!!

Of course, all you socialist, statist Vive left-wing types would probably prefer some dreary alternative that precludes stockbroker types, accountants, lawyers, folks who'd pimp their mom for a buck and their ilk from making money for nothing and instead preserve the world for our descendants. You guys are just a drag.

Had to say it before 'anon'. Sorry.
