When the cameras were on, the PM tried to exude warmth and sincere gratitude as he shook hands with the troops, but he appeared to have trouble shaking his businesslike, stand-offish image.
His well-choreographed and much-photographed lunch in the mess hall seemed to be mostly frozen smiles and polite conversation with a side dish of frankfurters and soda pop.
But the PM, notorious for his disdain for the media, appeared to be taking steps to ease and even improve relations with reporters accompanying him on his trip. He surprised many with invitations up to his section of the plane for 10-minute casual chats.
More importantly, the images beamed into the living rooms of the Canadian public showed a rookie PM mingling with the troops and showing leadership.
