DESPERATELY SEEKING DOCTORS explores the forces at play in the current family doctor crisis. We see the changing face of family medicine in Canada — from the beloved and revered cradle-to-grave caregiver of the past who made house calls, delivered babies and sometimes accepted chickens as pay — to today’s family doctor who moves as rapidly as possible through a waiting room crammed full of patients — to the young medical student wrestling with whether or not to follow his father into family medicine. Through their stories we discover why so many physicians are opting out of family medicine, and why fewer medical students are choosing this field of practice.
The situation is already critical, and is about to get much, much worse - with a huge bulge of baby boom doctors about to retire, and younger doctors disinclined to sacrifice personal lives to their careers.
Filmmakers Sharon Bartlett and Maria LeRose set out on a cross-Canada journey of discovery, exposing actions taken by government and the medical system; actions that arguably have jeopardized the future of family medicine and the health of Canadians. DESPERATELY SEEKING DOCTORS reveals Canada at the edge of an abyss. Can we find our way back to a place where there are enough doctors to care for all Canadians — or must we gather our resources and make the leap to a new model?
Today, the health of Canadians drifts in a zone of uncertainty. The one thing that is certain -- without action, millions more of us will be desperately seeking doctors.
