I Want To Talk Proportional Representaiton

Posted on Thursday, June 10 at 12:02 by Flying on Helium
I could blabber on for pages, but in the spirit of actually submitting a story here are two to consider.

This is a lengthy PDF arguing for PR in Canada. It goes farther in proposing a system called the "20% Solution" (how tacky).

This blurb argues (eventually) against PR in Canada.

There's also Fairvote Canada:

I also have a rant in "Say YES to proportional representation in Canada!!", if anyone really wants to know what I think.

I'm intersted in what others have to say about this topic.

[Editors note - I believe this is the story to which out 'enlightened' friend (Helium joke - sorry :-) is referring. Dr Caleb]

This is why I believe a coalition government between the Conservative Party and NDP is a possibility. Look at it this way: we support proportional representation, so do you. We want an elected senate, so do you. We want a reduction in GST, so do you. We want the Gun registry scrapped, so do you. Get my point!

Anonymous, Conservatives want corporate taxes abolished so that public services will have to be privatized. Conservatives want to take away womens rights to sovereignty over their own bodies.
    Conservatives want the death penalty.
Conservatives want to send our soldiers to Iraq.
Conservatives want deep integration with the USA.
Conservatives are a lot like Liberals and I am beginning to think the CCCE along with the mass media knows that and is spending a lot of time and effort to convince Canadians that there is an appreciable difference between the two parties. Both parties want deep integration with the USA and both parties want expansion and enhancement of the NAFTA, FTA, FTAA and WTO treaties.

I forgot to say that I am in favor of proportional representation and have been handing out flyers to spread the word around. If you would like to help get the word out go to Fair Vote Canada and volunteer, we need all the hands we can get.

There is NO WAY the NDP should enter into such an agreement.

If they did, I would not vote for them. Ever !

    Jack is smarter than that.

I should have added (I do this a lot) I am a member of FVC and PR is coming, bet on it.

It is necessary for us to allow the smaller parties to get involved, or we will be stuck forever with the Libs and Cons.

    What a thought !!

I agree Jim, I could never support an alliance with the alliance/cons...Jack wouldn't do it; they are way too differnt...I didn't know that the cons were in favour of the death penalty...that seems weird against killing innocent babies but for killing(possibly innocent)adults...I guess killing is relative to the cons.

I don't like killing period; but I don't think that the marriage issue or the abortion issue are major issues for this election. IMO...they both are personal choices, and I just feel that if they can keep these issues in the forefront we won't be talking about the issues which will cost us ALL choices in the future.

If we choose the Liberals we will be in the BMD system, we will be part of the Patriot Act through our census, we will never find out what happened in the sponsorship scandal, we will keep feeding the gun registry, we will never see our EI money...

if we elect the Cons, we will be Americans, we will be going to war and soon, we will be without healthcare for all, we will be everything we don't want to be...

the NDP at least is talking like the Canada I want, a free sovereign nation, they will address NAFTA, we won't have the BMD, we will have healthcare, end homelessness, the list goes on about what we will have....proportional representation would be great...but first we have to have a country!!!

    Milton and Jim,

I'm there with FVC and next week we're having a Citizen's Assembly round table that I will attend and have my handouts for some of the BCers involved in the PR for BC. Also next week we're having an all candidates debate that will be a good place to hand out our fliers too.
