Martin's promise of New Deal for Cities a bad deal for local communities, says CUPE [May 28, 2004] EDMONTON ?

Paul Martin has repeated his often-promised pledge to increase funding to cities and towns but the big winners are likely to be big business, says the union that represents municipal workers across Canada.

"If we can believe the Liberals, more money will flow to cities and towns," said Paul Moist, National President of the Canadian Union of Public Employees. "But the Liberals have said the money for transit and water and roads should be tied to so-called 'public private partnerships' that put corporations in the driver's seat, assuring them huge profits, while leave communities to pay higher costs."

Yeah, Martin is suddenly the good guy with all the promises and solutions. When Martin was asked why he didn`t automatically give health care a shot in the arm when he was sworn in, but now proclaims to have the money for health care, he replied, " Because I wanted to have a clear mandate for this." But Yet he did not care about having a mandate for sharing Canadian tax information with US customs, or with the Lougheed Martin census.

Martin's money for health care is dependant on meetings with the provinces who for the most part want private-public-partnerships (P3's). In any case he lied about the red book contract so what is to stop him from lying about his health care proposals. Once he is in, we won't be able to do anything about it other than protest and they may outlaw that too.
There is no money for municipalities, they have to borrow it from the private sector banks and the fed.s will make some payments to the private sector for them. This means more money paid in interest, because the federal government pays less interest on borrowed money than municipalities. We will get less done while paying more, now we will pay interest at the federal and provincial levels for money spent on each project (the municipalities will borrow from the private sector and interest will accrue on the loan which will have payments made by the Federal gov't with borrowed money on which they are also paying interest). Hallelujah, a two tiered compound interest scam. No wonder the banks love the guy. Follow the money, it is all going to the private sector. They don't even mention that they could use the Bank of Canada for the issuance of loans to the municipalities.
