Russia's Arctic Gambit

Posted on Thursday, August 09 at 10:54 by jensonj
In fact, Moscow's move, derided as a 15th century style "stunt," may in fact have been designed to pressure us to do so. In 2001, Russia filed a claim to an expanded continental shelf with the 21-member United Nations Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf under LOST, to which it is a signatory. Russians claim that the Arctic seabed is connected to its territory through the so-called the Lomonosov Ridge, which makes it Russian territory. The U.S. has shown the claim to be bogus. http://money.cnn.com:80/news/newsfeeds/articles/newstex/IBD-0001-18765250.htm
