GM Industry Puts Human Gene Into Rice

Posted on Monday, April 25 at 10:58 by 4Canada
In the first modification of its kind, Japanese researchers have inserted a gene from the human liver into rice to enable it to digest pesticides and industrial chemicals. The gene makes an enzyme, code-named CPY2B6, which is particularly good at breaking down harmful chemicals in the body. http://news.independent.co.uk/world/environment/story.jsp?story=632444

Oui! Je pense que le Canada est un pays ou le peuple parlent francais et anglais. And english being my first language, I never felt like french was being shoved down my throat. We can choose to learn it, or speak it. I know many of my fellow anglo Canadians who chose not to speak it. Ah, we`re getting off topic, though. See what happens when you tug at my heart strings?

Arrr matey. <br><br> Methinks this cannibalism thing is overly sensationalistic. Humans share a large number of genes with every living organism on this planet (including plants!). For the curious, head your unpatched eye over to <a href="http://www.thetech.org/genetics/ask.php?id=83">http://www.thetech.org/genetics/ask.php?id=83</a> and have a look. <br><br> Arrr. We should evaluate the merits of such genetic meddling and its drawbacks and make the decision from that standpoint -- not run after it with pitchforks! You should save that for when I come to town! <br><br> Arrrr!<p>---<br>- Saskatchewan River Pirate

Agreed; I already share genetic code with chickens and pigs, and I have no problem eating them. Cannibalism is not determined at a genetic level, and it is just a sensationalist tactic. Bad editors!

Canadians are asking, why do americans hate us? They hate our freedoms: our freedom of religion, our freedom of speech, our freedom to disagree with each other.

Why not? Humans have been manipulating the genetics of plants and animals for hundreds of years. You think that winter wheat you are eating is the same wheat that your great-grandparents ate? Think again.

The problem is that there is no way to tell how the gene will interact in its new environment. We are diddling with Pandoras box.

So, if you are a vegetarian or perhaps a Hindu, what does this say for your personal belief system? Does it violate your beliefs or choices? Are they going to label it? Just whose liver are you eating? Are all livers the same? Is there some nut case who is going to make everyone eat his/her liver and thus obtain immortality? Love it. Science is so cool. I want everyone to eat my liver. I will live forever.
