U.S. Senate Resolution Calls For End To Inhumane Canadian Seal Hunt

Posted on Sunday, March 25 at 07:58 by jensonj
The resolution notes that more than one million seals have been killed over the past three years. In the last five years, 95 percent of the seals killed were pups between 12 days and 12 weeks of age, many of them too young to have eaten their first solid meal or taken their first swim. "This hunt is cruel and the Canadian government's own regulations regarding humane killing are not respected or enforced," said John W. Grandy, senior vice president of wildlife and habitat protection for The Humane Society of the United States. "It is heartening that the U.S. Senate is speaking to the annual bloodletting." The resolution will be referred to the Committee on Foreign Relations, chaired by Senator Joseph Biden (D-DE) and ranking minority member Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN). Sen. Biden is an original co-sponsor. http://www.yubanet.com/artman/publish/article_53532.shtml [Proofreader's note: this article was edited for spelling and typos on March 26, 2007]

Aye, save the baby seals, let the civilians die. They really need every distraction they can, don't they?

I would just *love* to see the Canadian retaliate by asking the US to withdraw from Aghanistan and Irak.

    THEY SAY:

"The clubbing of baby seals cannot be defended or justified," said Sen. Levin. "Canada should end it, just as we ended the commercial Alaska seal hunt more than 20 years ago."

"This hunt is cruel and the Canadian government's own regulations regarding humane killing are not respected or enforced"

    ANSWER:

"The killing, raping or looting of Irakis cannot be defended or justified," said Prime Minister Stephen Harper. "The US should end it, just as cilivilised people stopped wars of agression for profit quite some time ago."

"This war is cruel and the US government's own regulations regarding humane treatment of civilian populations are not respected or enforced."

Hey, we can always dream, right?

"U.S. Senate Resolution Calls for End to Inhumane Canadian Seal Hunt"

These wackojobs in the US senate seem to be goading us into organizing a lynch mob. What a bunch of assholes! Sorry but that's the nicest way I could put it, and I'm being far too kind as it is.

As Wolf points out, the hypocrisy is like a slap in the face (or more like a good beating) when the deaths of a few seals for profit are given a far higher moral priority over the for profit maiming, suffering, enslavement, and killing of thousands of fellow human beings.

A perhaps not so imaginary conversation between 2 US senators:

"Yep Bubba, we'll sure enough save those poor baby seals. What are those Canadians thinkin' anyways?

I don't know Earl, but we still have the Homeless Bill to consider.

The Homeless? Hell they don't even vote. F*ck 'em."

The slaughter of ALL mammals has to stop. Including humans and seals. Canada nor the USA can justify the practices.

I can agree with that, I was just pointing out the glaring irony and hypocrisy behind this situation.

    Or, more like,

'Geez, if I come out against this Iraq war, the media is gonna call me unpatriotic! I'll be lynched by my own state!'

'We could get people on side with these cute baby seals, though. Just look at em! All furry and white, the media would HAVE to back us up on this!'

'Good plan! Maybe in the GOP, you could float a kinda, 'Baby Jezus luvs the Baby Seals!' campaign!

I'm all for slaughtering mammals that cook up real nice on the bbq, but not those baby seals. That's just sick and mean. An Inuit hunter should be free to carve up it's mother though, that's a lot of good meat and part of their cultural diet.
