Demand Public Inquiry Into Arar Case

Posted on Saturday, October 11 at 20:06 by sthompson
On September 26, 2002 Arar was arrested in the US and deported to Jordan and then to Syria. For over a year, Maher Arar was isolated from his family and the outside world. He finally arrived home to Canada on October 6th, 2003.

IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUESTED

CONTACT the following:

* Prime Minister Jean Chrétien
Tel: 613-992-4211
Fax: 613-941-6900
E-mail: pmo@pm.gc.ca

* Your local MP. The best method is a telephone call, followed by faxes and then e-mail. Obtain the name and full contact information of your Member of Parliament by calling (613) 992-4793, or by typing your postal code at: www.parl.gc.ca/information/about/people/house/PostalCode.asp?Source=SM

Use the following points in demanding a full public inquiry:

* Many questions remain about what really happened to Arar, including any involvement of Canadian law enforcement and security agencies. Without the answers, there is no guarantee that what happened to Maher Arar will not happen to other Canadians.

* There must be a clear public accounting of why Maher Arar was put in peril through deportation from the United States to Syria.

* American officials, from Colin Powell to Paul Celucci, have indicated that it was Canadian security that passed the US information about Arar.

* Solicitor General Wayne Easter is sending conflicting signals to Canadians. A short time ago, he did not discount the possibility that certain elements in the RCMP may have passed on information to the Americans.

* If elements within the RCMP are to blame, the RCMP is complicit in depriving a Canadian citizen of safety, security and fundamental legal rights.

* Canadians have the right to know if a citizen was the casualty of an improper procedure or violation of law in a security agency that is supposed to be accountable to the government and people of Canada.

    I agree. Why should the US be able to nonchalantly deport our citizens here and there without explanation?
