Latin America remains an area of low priority for a United States primarily preoccupied with Iraq, Iran, North Korea and China. Yet Latin America is critically important for the United States because of the significant economic stakes. This includes not only large loans (both public and private) and investments in the region, but also two-way trade of major proportions. Latin America is a source of significant raw materials.
Depending on global developments and changes in U.S. access to petroleum and other important resources abroad, especially in the Middle East, Latin America may become even more essential to the United States in the future.
