"Everything is on the line in these final weeks of this Congress," Ed Markey, a U.S.. Democratic congressman from Massachusetts, told a gathering of several thousand anti-drilling activists, bused in from across the United States.
Democratic Senator Hillary Clinton complained that Republicans are using Katrina as a pretext, knowing it will take seven to 12 years to pump oil in the area.
"It makes no sense to respond to a disaster in the Gulf by making a disaster in Alaska," she said.
Under a 1987 agreement, Canada and the United States pledged to not to do anything that would endanger the Porcupine caribou herd, which migrates across the border, winding up in Alaska in late spring to calve.

Seems to me that the US is breaking it's word yet again.
Agreement, as in promise not to do it.
Anyone who disagrees with the US shafting Canada again with another treaty breach is a complete and utter bonehead, isn't that right John Tiller?
Please re-read and try again.

"and the knowledge they fear is a weapon to be used against them"
"The Weapon" - Rush
Canada will pay a very high price for the "wealth" created from those oil sands, in ecological and human destruction. I have a 23 year old grandaughter working in Ft.Mc.Murray, who talks about undrinkable waters and polluted air they have to breathe. I hope she'll have enough brains to get out of that area before it causes her irreversible damage, and for a Canadian government who, for a change, can use their brains and realize the criminal actions of these "wealth creators"
For one thing, the present oil supplies of the world could last for hundreds of years if used wisely. But that wouldn't add to the GDP, so we have to destroy the Earth to please the economists and the multinational corporate Mafia.
The first thing should be overall disarmament and get rid of 95% of military aircraft and 90% of airliners. The worst fuel wasters and polluters today. I don't know how many B52 flights we had over our house yesterday, here in Central BC, but I counted 3, when I happened to be outside.
I calculated once that during the time I can see those war criminal murder machines, they're using enough fuel to power my truck, 2 tractors and several small engines for 5 years.
Multiply this by hundreds of times every day and see where the oil goes.
The same for airliners. Just because some people want to be somewhere else on hysterical whims, we're wasting huge amounts of fuel and poison thouands of innocent victims. Every time a jetliner takes off, it causes more pollution than a small city in a day. How many thousands of airliners take off every day and for what logical reason ?
Then, there was the destruction of thousands of km. of rail lines in Canada, because "road transport is now more efficient". In other words more profitable, which counts as "efficient" in our age, as the waste adds to the GDP.
How about the millions of cars used for communting every day to mindless and useless jobs that could be done at home or in small, locally based businesses, especially now with computer technology?
This list of economic idiocies could go on for pages, but then, all this waste and destruction adds to the "growth of the GDP", so in the warped minds of our economists and politicians it is perfectly OK.

“If “ (a word quite mis-used) wishes were horses beggars would ride
It is the either/or mentality these folks get stuck in
The thinking follows this path: “if” it can’t be this, it must be “that”
John Tiller, by his chosen words of expression, is a current example of that variety of thinking and therefore sets the tone for rebuttal to take the counter position.
That is if one is stuck in either/or
These narrow band thinkers
Are lost outside of the bounds of their belief and will fight to the death in some cases t “prove” their point
When such a mind set has power they then send others to die for them
Beware of that variety of tiller
And mind those who till the soil
They are the ones who create out of effort
