Film Review: Liberty Bound By Christine Rose

Posted on Tuesday, February 15 at 11:20 by KevinGagnon
The film provides accurate information on the US government’s foreign policy, war on terrorism, the PATRIOT Act, and the media’s role in shaping our perspective on relevant issues. Although she has received no formal training in filmmaking, she has been a committed and tireless activist since her days as a student. With Liberty Bound, Christine became the journalist, talking to American citizens about their experiences, feelings, and fears. “You cannot have a democracy with an uninformed and unengaged public.”

The film is primarily composed of personal interviews with folks like Jeff Seemann, an activist who protested a Bush Speech at Ohio State University in June 2002. The students were told if they didn’t applaud for the president’s speech they risked being expelled. He decided to turn around when Bush started the commencement speech; and he, his wife and his 3 year old daughter were immediately escorted out and threatened with arrest. "Winston", who chooses to remain anonymous, was interrogated by the police on a train for having a philosophical discussion. And Michael Moore, US Navy Veteran, was paid a visit by the Secret Service one month after expressing himself politically in an email to some friends. The film also features commentary from Michael Parenti, Author and Social Commentator and Howard Zinn, Historian and Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Boston University.

Woven through the interviews are rarely seen footage from the events of 9/11 and the war in Afghanistan. The film calls into question the mainstream media's efficiency and its ethics, but the filmmaker denies being a propagandist. The point of the film, she says, is merely "to get people to think for themselves...to not believe everything they hear on the news without question or analysis."

Towards the end of the film, we bear witness to the list of countries the USA has bombed in the past few years and are inspired by the individual American towns and cities that have successfully passed resolutions representing millions of people who oppose sections of the USA PATRIOT Act. This is an excellent film, one with heart and compassion as it informs us of our corporate media’s collusion with our government’s attempt to keep its true agenda hidden, secret, and covert. As in all things, there is an interconnected web of co-dependency, but this one is feeding off of and reinforcing unconscious fear and projections.

Liberty Bound leaves us with the question: “Is the United States bound for liberty – or does it just have liberty bound?
