So far, only one federal employee, civilian director Paul Champagne, has been fired after auditors discovered National Defence had paid $160 million for military computer hardware and support services it never received.

Federal audits continue and an RCMP investigation is underway.

The principal company involved, Hewlett Packard, has said that Steve Bailey, a sales representative who worked with Champagne, is no longer with them.

    I really believe that governments at all levels need to stop telling us what we can't afford, until we resolve the obvious hole in our public funds bucket! I don't think the sponsorship is an isolated case and I suspect, through recent information I've been reading, that this problem has been going on for years.

    We make the sacrifices to healthcare and other social systems in order to support the backroom deals and corporate 'consulting' and lobby groups. The recent ethics bill that passed without enough safeguards is just another way of thumbing their nose at Canadians, we have had ethics rules for years, Pearson I believe introduced the first guidelines, but unless there are deterents and fines, including jail time, it will never stop. Canadians deserve better!

    I believe that government shouldn't tell us squat. They are there at our sufferance, they should do as they are told by the citizens of Canada. If they were serious about preventing this sort of stuff in the future, they would enact legislation to adopt fair accounting practices, like the rest of the world has to, instead of the shell game they do now.<p> <p>---<br>"History does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme" Mark Twain <br />

    There are two things to consider when you vote for a person.

    1) They go to the HoC to take your ideas with them;

    2) They go to the HoC because they are smarter than us and will make their own decisions. These are the politicians that have no right to represent us, because they don't !

    If we start showing up in greater numbers and ask more pertinent questions at all-candidate meetings, we could weed out the wheat from the chaff.

    We don't have enough people willing to learn about the issues, and to show enough interest in our country.

    They just leave it up to those who take the time and hope for the best.

    I'm sorry, that's not good enough !

    Well, there has to be more transparency when it comes to spending our money! And there has to be bona-fide penalties that deter this behaviour by government people! And they were all doing it, including Martin! Notice how the media is trying to portray that martin knew nothing and had nothing to do with any scandal.

    Have most of you read Maude Barlow's book yet (profit is not the cure)? I'm reading it now, on chapter 3.

    Dr Caleb,

    That's just what I said on another post. Politicians are a channel for our voice. We tell the government what to do. The problem is, is that we haven't been doing that and they have gone astray. It's like little kids that aren't given any boundries, they're unbearable and out of control. We need to take our voice back and reset the boundaries!
