Alliance Swamp May Put Chill In Conservative Party Marriage: MacKay

MONTREAL (CP) - Conservative Leader Stephen Harper ignored his party's internal brawling Friday and instead waded into the ranks of the governing Liberals with both fists flying.

"For you, politics is a cause, not a racket," Harper told more than 2,500 delegates at the merged Conservative party's first policy convention. "You are in public life to give, not to take; to build, not to profit; to serve others, not to help yourselves."

Charging that Canada is led by "a government under investigation," Harper wrapped up a fractious day hoping his best defence was a withering offence.

Harper's keynote speech overlooked an explosive internal debate that had gone to the core of the Canadian Alliance-Progressive Conservative merger and sent a host of party officials into damage control. Harper's aides had said he would address the controversy. He did not.
