OTTAWA (CP) - Wanted: 50 progressive Canadians to keep alive vote-splitting on the right.

A small group of disgruntled former Tories has successfully registered a new political entity with Elections Canada, called the Progressive Canadians - or PC Party. Now the PCs are seeking 50 candidates to carry the standard in the next federal election and make them eligible for all rights and privileges under the Elections Act.

"to keep alive vote-splitting on the right"

That seems like a fairly heavy-handed bias...

I think supporting any other party in Apr 2004 is just stupid. As Mel Hurtig said in a talk, if the NDP does not do well in the election, the morning after, he & others will be organizing & campaigning to take out whatever party of scumbags gets in. I agree with Mel, while I don't think the NDP 100% perfect they would be MUCH better than the Liberals or American Party. Support the NDP right now & if they don't do well, get out there & help build another party.

I agree Nsay. My vote is with the NDP. After the election my support will most likely change. Maybe the Progressive Canadian Party will ben and option, or Canadian Action Party. There will be many different options. Personally I do like the idea of the Progressive Canadian Party who are able to use the PC Party in their advertising.

Not that a name is the only deciding factor. I also think this Progressive Canadian Party so far has some good people behind it. I also think its just a matter of time before Sinclair Steves and David Orchard get behind this Progressive Canadian Party.

I still think Canada Party is the best name so far.

I agree Kevin. The PC Party label is well known. They just have to get back to their roots ie the party of MacDonald, Diefinbaker and Borden.

But since they have choosen the name Progressive Canadian Party the people who formed the party have a responsibility to bring as many voters as they can into this one big party.

I think this may be the opportunity that we have been looking for if the Progressive Canadian Party reaches out to all voters and bring them into this one big tent party. I do have admiration for them in getting on with doing something. We talk about this one big party well this is the start.

No Kevin, I am not voting for the NDP. I am still not sold on Jack Layton.

I'm not sold on Layton either, but I'll be damned if I'll vote for the Liberals or the Harpers.

I'm only voting NDP for the first time in my life because there is no one else to vote for that will not take Canada down that road I don't want to go down.

Well Jim, I for one am looking at this Progressive Canadian Party quite closely. This could certainly be the start of this One Big Party that Paul Hellyer was talking about.

The people that have registered the Party seem to have a lot of good people behind it. The PC Party in 2000 got over a million votes. So as I have always said CAP could be the catalyst for the One Big Party and that the NDP was not the end all and be all.

Jim as I saw by your posting in regards to the formation of an association for the Progressive Canadian Party you do now have an alternative. Heck even CAP made the offer to change our name to " Progressive Canadian Party" if David Orchard took the leadership.

So all I am saying is that you receiving the e-mail from the Progressive Canadian Party was maybe not a mistake. They may be reaching out to start building that one big party that everyone is talking about. We also have to keep in mind that these people are trying to get back to their roots ie MacDonald, Borden and Diefinbaker not the party of Mulronney and MacKay.

Maybe CAP can step up to the plate again and make this Progressive Canadian Party come alive. Get together and foot 100 candidates or more instead of 50 that both parties are trying to get out before the next election is called as separate entities. I have an idea but I will post it a little later this evening. Work Calls.

    Hello JimmyD,

I'm also looking into this Progressive Canadian Party. Joe Hueglin has asked me to call him. I'm anxious to call hi. I'm sure it will make for a interesting conversation.

Joe Hueglin is a former Tory MP from Niagara Falls, Ont. His one of the organizers behind this new party.

I wish I had the skills, talents and experience to be an MP for this new party, cause I would consider being a candidate for the Timmins - James Bay riding.

    Hi Kevin

The Progressive Canadian Party is looking good. You know if you feel strongly about running for the party then I for one would encourage you to do so. The only way that you can develop the skills required is to get involved in an election campaign as a candidate.

If you do not feel that you are ready at this time to be a candidate why not set up an association locally to support the party.

Whatever your decision is I wish you luck.

The only way that you can develop the skills required is to get involved in an election campaign as a candidate.

That makes sense. Then my next obstacle is my current financial situation. I work a full time job, pay rent and looking to start buying some apartment buildings as income property. My number one priority at 24 years old is building up my assets, and reducing my personal debt that has no returns.
I think to start I should become a well known and respected person in the community, before I become a candidate of a political party. I think its important when people vote for YOU, and not just for a party brand name.
Kevin

Well Kevin you do have a point. What about helping to set up a riding association in your area for the new party?

Did you have an opportunity to contact Joe Hueglin?

    Hello JimmyD,

I haven't considered yet the possibility of setting up a riding association. And Yes I do have the opportunity to talk to Joe. I should be talking to him this weekend or some time next week.

Anyone in downtown Toronto at the riding of Trinity-Spadina? I have agreed to run in this riding for the Progressive Canadians which would be a lot of fun as it looks increasingly like Olivia Chow will go up against Tony Ianno. David Watters is the CPC candidate. I just need some organizational and slight fundraising support to get over the hump. I can probably get access to a database of former PCPC members in this riding pre-merger which we can play with. Any help would be appreciated. My phone # is 416.725.3630 ... There is no way in hell will Stephen Harper become the Prime Minister of my country.

Thank you in advance to anyone who wishes to help.

Asif.. you better think twice about accessing people's personal data for the purpose of something different than it was collected for. I think if you want to run for politics, you better become familiar with some of Canada's laws. PIPEDA is one such law you better get to know pretty darn quickly.

If you EVER used my data in any database for your own personal political ambitions, that I had not given you permission to use, you'll have the PIPEDA Police at your door pretty damn quick.

But thanks for the admission here. Now we know that there's a good possibility you'll stoop to illegal activity in your election campaign.
