MONTREAL -- The Conservative Party has a debt of about $4 million contrary to public assurances the party didn't owe the bank a dime, the Sun has learned. The party's Confederation Club fund chairman Irving Gerstein will deliver the grim news today in his financial report to the 2,000 delegates attending the convention.
It's the first time since the parties merged in 2003 that members have had a financial update, and the news comes at a time when there's a disagreement among the ranks over how the party will administer its finances.
A source close to the situation said it's going to come as a surprise to many party members, like it did to Leader Stephen Harper.
