In addition to this abstract philosophical consideration, there is the fact that thousands of American citizens are longing for Canada to keep its distance from the United States government, to stick to its role as a peacekeeper, to retain its status as a separate sovereign country. And some Americans are looking to Canada as a safe haven for migration, should the situation in the United States deteriorate still further. Many of us are keenly aware that the Canadian government does not speak for most Canadians, but neither does the American government speak for most Americans. We need to remember this. A majority of the popular vote is a rather meager statistic when the numbers who do not vote are factored in. It is only relative to past poor showings of the American electorate that the recent numbers look impressive, and many people reckon that these were artificially inflated by the social issues that were thrown onto the ballot in swing states. So if we were really interested in benefiting the Americans we would do what we ought to do anyway, which is to protect our long-term legitimate interests and to guard our national sovereignty. Deep continental integration would pose a threat not just to Canada, but to people in other parts of the world as well. They too need to see us standing strong and free. The Council of Canadians is encouraging us to think more boldly, so let’s respond to the invitation.
There are reasons why peace, health, and general prosperity seem to have been rendered virtual impossibilities. They are too cheap. Peace is too cheap. Health is too cheap. We live in a world governed by economic rules that strive to do everything as expensively as possible, while avowing efficiency and trying to 'rationalize' the big enterprises. Meanwhile our government leaders are telling us that there is not enough money to go round and that we must tighten our belts. These contradictions are built into the system. They are its life blood.

If I stand for my country today...will my country be here to stand for me tomorrow?
Lets just be Canadians.
