BC Medical Services Plan To Be Taken Over By US

BCGEU president George Heyman

BCGEU President George Heyman says the union objects to the government's plan to turn MSP administration over to an American multinational.

"We are asking the court to find that selling the administration of medicare to an American multinational corporation is a violation of both the Medicare Protection Act of B.C. and the Canada Health and the Canada Health Act."

Heyman says unless the sale is stopped, the personal information of British Columbians would become accessible to the FBI under the Patriot Law in the U.S.

The BCGEU's lawyer, Murray Rankin, say it gives the FBI and other U.S. government agencies unlimited access to company databases.

"The test is whether the corporation in the United States has access to the documents and ability to obtain the documents," he says. "Technologically, access would not seem to be much of a problem."

INTERVIEW: B.C. Almanac's Mark Forsythe speaks with George Heyman.

But Health Minister Colin Hansen says B.C. residents don't need to worry that their medical records might end up in the hands of the U.S. government.

The government says patient privacy will be mandatory and personal health information will continue to be protected.

Excellent idea! We could use this forward thinking here in Ontario. A responsible gov\'t, not Liberal of course, could oversee service delivery. Unfortunately, here in Ontario, there are some people who would rather wait in line, in pain, for health services because they get greater satisfaction in knowing that the rich guy down the street has to wait too, unbelievable.

Why don`t you just move to your beloved USA if you like all of this corporate fascism going on? Because most Canadians who are thinking logically are opposed to any privatization, especially giving authority up to an American corporation. Sounds like you can afford private medicine. So go to the land of dog eat dog and purchase it! Health care in the public fashion can be delivered quickly and efficiently, at high quality (like years ago) if the government was not corrupted by people like you!

Ditto Dave! This must be a new anon, with a real aversion to democracy and the Canadian way of life, which has been proven to be the best in the world, if we could just get those who wish to live the American way to move on out, especially out of gov!

Because they are anonyMouse I\'m assuming they are of the land of Mickey Mouse, they\'re with the companies waiting with drooling tongues for their lap puppies to hand it over. Or waiting to sign the U.S. franchise called Drugs are US. Or U need Dr.Ugs. Or McDrugs. Or Home Depotsitory.

BC is filling fast with wealthy retirees. A private company is more effective at providing services and turning a profit. Question: Is this private company(s) listed on any stock exchange, \'cause y\'know, i might be interested.

For those on this board that might find this repugnant: Sorry to bust your eggshell life. The future is only going to get harder to deal with, more expensive, and more unjust. Learn survival skills now, before it\'s too late.

You are correct. Life will get harder, healthcare will become private and expensive - if we do nothing to stop it. Business is good at maximizing profit, but that profit must come from within. Employees and quality of product must suffer to maximize profit. Good if the business is Wal-Mart. But it's a recipie for healthcare. You may welcome our American Overlords, but I will fight their opression at any cost.<p> <p>---<br>"History does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme" Mark Twain <br />"The greatest price of not participating in politics is being governed by your inferiors." For profit can NEVER deliver services at the same cost as not-for-profit like our health care system is now.

The troll is baiting and without a clue. Check OECD reports for the past two decades and see - countries with public health care systems are ALL above the US model you so desire.

Eat on that for awhile and come back and tell us you are still in such a hurry to give up even more money on the premise you are getting \'more\'.

how much are nurses paid? 40 grand + ?
and what about doctors? 150 grand ?
plus they have to go to \'school\' for years. Why? to maintain the exclusivity of their smoke-n-mirrors craft. Ask anyone who wanted to be a doctor during the 1970\'s or 1980\'s. \'doctoring\' is a club for the wealthy. Wanted to be a doctor back then, then you had to be a member of the right sinagogue.

Western (jewdayoh-christian) style medical system is designed to enrich the few on the backs of many. Holistic, self help information has been kept from the public because of the elitist tyranny. Dr Phil (aka Dr Pill- jew) is a paid spokesman for the pharma industry. The goofs that watch tv now watch non-stop commercials disguised as entertainment. Ha ha.

Being wealthy has nothing to do with \'surviving\' or being \'stronger.\' A rich person is not necessarily smarter. Most rich people and corporations are criminals. And then they pass down the wealth to their kids. Now, real survival is taxing the rich to fund health care and education, making a happier and healthier, society. It also widens the talent pool, something the rich are afraid of because they really don`t want to compete against someone who`s \'survival\' skills have been sharpened by the school of hard knocks, so they close the doors, like we are witnessing today with this corporate fascism thing. Not to mention, if HUMANITY is to survive, then a social democratic style of government better be allowed to equitably allot the life chances, for the kid in the ghetto just might have the cure for your rich uncle`s cancer! Survival of humanity will get tougher, due to GREED, and this millionaire-billionaire GREED is actually REGRESSIVE, thereby demonstrating poor survival skills!

Dr. Caleb excellent satire, we have a real winner here,(guess they haven\'t figured out, in Canada, we don\'t tolerate or believe the ignorant comments, perhaps they will go away) and Dave most rich people are not corrupt...I\'m sure you didn\'t mean it quite that generally...there are many people who worked hard and invested or saved and have accumulated wealth, they are not crooks...but there are many that are corrupt and they are influencing the lives of the poor...healthcare is not unsustainable, but the handouts in corporate wealthfare must cease, if we took all the money that has been wasted in just the last 3 or 4 yrs we wouldn\'t have a problem. Klein is talking about private healthcare with perks like room service etc., now that just blows my mind. How about enough nurses and doctors to just administer care, never mind serving wine?

We need to put money into education, especially educating Canadians in the fields that we are lacking, like doctors etc. and the comment about how much doctors and nurses make, well gee they are saving lives, compare that to pro-sports...where are our values???

you guys waste a lot of energy on me. bigotry is in the eyes of the beholder. I employ a memorable writing style, a jagged knife run across your figurative throat. My service to this board is to give y\'all a common enemy, to bind you together. Allowing yeah to focus on fighting the good fight. A trollish, mollish, contrarian i\'ll be, forever and forever, amen.

Your perceived importance is lost on us,as we already have a common bond, the evil we fight is the corporate oppression which affects everyone of us, no matter what race, creed, colour or sexual orientation.

We the people do not need a diversion to suck our energy from the mission at hand, which is to see that all people everywhere have the basic necessities of life, to live, to prosper and achieve a moderate level of happiness in this short space we call life!

As you can see, we know that the greatest form of discrimination and bigotry is launched at the poor, the ill and uneducated. The crimes against humanity are born out of the fears of those who wish to target any select group of beings to permeate the rest of society with a diversion, rather than find solutions to the problems of greed and selfishness that are the true root of all evils. Hence your efforts are a waste of energy and reveal your true intentions are to be part of the problem and not the solution. Recognizing your existance is by know means creating a common enemy for us; we will fight for your rights along with everyone elses, you don\'t even need to thank us...we know you know!

I did not say all rich people are crooks or corrupt. However, MOST that I know got that way by crooked activity. Honest! As for others who have worked hard and in an honest fashion, they too, needed some sort of help, or connections. They too, had to be in the right place at the right time. Anonymous, you place too much arrogance and importance on yourself. We don`t need you to unite and fight. As for prejudice, I don`t see any here.
